California - Northern

I live in Del Norte, anything south of Chico is not northern CA

All are welcome on the thread.

I live in Southern California (Los Angeles County) and have vacation property in Northern California (Modoc County) so I'm on BOTH threads and don't worry about Central California at all since I consider us ALL Californians

I cannot figure out how to candle the eggs. I have the flashlight. Dark room. Do I take them out one at a time and look at them. I don't see anything. Today is day 10. Do I put the egg on top of the light leaving it large side up? Is that the correct way?

I using a flashlight, you will need to add a seal to it. A piece of foam pipe will work.

Candle from the top of the big end--look for the condition of the air cell and veins at 8 days of incubation.

This is a brinsea high intensity candler. I can candle from the bottom with it. Notice that it has a rubber seal over the light.

When I am candling how important is it to not flip the egg over. I.e. Always keeping the big end up. If you rotate it will the air cell get messed up? Can you candle from the Side? Since these eggs are from my hens and my rooster is around 6 months could they not be fertile? I only know for a fact he is breeding two. The two hens have lost a lot of feathers. I assume from him breeding them. I am hoping at lease a couple of eggs are fertile.

candling from the side is acceptable. I wouldn't turn the eggs over myself.

It will not hurt the egg unless the air cell is detached.

I watched a video from a hatchery--they had an automated system that turned the eggs from end to end when it was time to turn the eggs. It does not hurt the eggs to turn them over.

Have you seen what broody hens do to eggs?

The danger in handling eggs that much is dropping them! That is why I candle from the top most of the time. I do not even take them out of the turner or tray.
