Had the oddest thing happen last evening.

I have a number of younger birds that are still allowed to free range my back yard because the aren't ready to live with the birds in the big pens yet. A group of 4 13 week olds (2 pita boys a pita girl and a delware girl) A group of five 6 week olds (4 delawares and 1 pita) who's broody left the about 2 weeks ago and I have a broody with 3 hamps and a wellie the same age.(My broody hatched the 1 pita and the other 8 are feed store chicks) The older birds were bator hatched

I also just moved outside 4 4 week old chicks into a brooder cage outside that I had hatched. These are the 4 friendliest chicks I have ever seen. They climb and perch on me and love to be paid attention to.

Well my daughter was handling the 4 and they decided to fly into the yard and mingle with the other birds. Usually chicks are afraid of the bigger stranger chickens. Not these 4 they all acted like they belonged to the flock, Well I just watched as the 13 week old Pita girl came to investigate them. She started trying to make clucking noises at the chicks and then lightly pecked each one like she was counting them. Then she proceeded to act like mother hen to these 4 chicks for the rest of their time out in the yard. Even the Boy Pitas came over and ate with the chicks and let them pick food off the beaks. Not once did these little birds act scared or posture up to the bigger birds they just took it all in stride. The Pita girl event took food out of the dish for them and pointed to things on the ground to eat. 13 weeks (barely if that). The only thing I can figure is she is imitating the broody with the Hamps. The broody with the hamps couldnt be bothered she looked at the little ones a bit but then took her brood off to another part of the yard.

It was instant integration. I guess I shouldn't be surprised the 13 week olds have sort of adopted the abandoned chicks they eat and hang out together during the day. These 6 week olds also interacted with the little guys just like flock mates. I've known Pitas are calm and easy going birds but this? Such good birds. Now the older pita boy will discipline the younger delaware boy when he stands up to him. (The 4 month old ones are 3 legbar mutts and a pita) It was the cutest thing last night these little birds were happy as clams to run around go talk to the bigger chickens play with the bigger chicks and the showed no fear even when they were told to settle down by the bigger birds. They didnt posture with the older birds and would just go and pick food off beaks like they had known them forever. Some of the older birds didnt really know what to make of these things that would invade their personal space so easily but they ate together and tolerated them just like they were flock mates. I wish I had video of it. It was really neat to see birds get along so well.

That is really cool @caychris. My Pita Pinta hen has become the peacemaker of the flock. Last week I let out the broody & chicks with the flock, and one of my big Orpington cockerels started fighting with the broody. They were really going at it, flying up & kicking each other. So the Pita Pinta ran over to them & pushed between them. The cockerel immediately walked away and the mama hen crouched down & put her head under the Pita Pinta's chest. I was so impressed with the Pita Pinta hen. I have seen her break up play-fights between the cockerels too.

Geez I hate this heat!! Its supposed to be 107 today and close to that everyday after until sunday. My poor chickens are so hot! I'm going out all day spraying down their run and them. They have lots of shade and some ice blocks. I just feel so bad for them.. :( wish I could afford a cooling system. :(

Yeah my husband and I had talked about that but we just found out we are going to need a new pump for our well. The people who owned the house before us added on but didn't adult the output of the well for a house twice as big as it was. Now we have a 1000 dollar electric bill every month during the summer and a older then time air conditioner that is so old it shouldn't even be running still. We knew this when we bought it. We had to make do with what we could afford so we bought it as a fixer upper. We just didn't realize the effect it would have on our electric bill. :(
Point being it would cost to much to leave a mister running full time. That's why I go out and do it myself several times a day.

A mister shouldn't use much water at all. When I turn mine off, they go for a while before the pressure in the hose dissipates. Kern

You don't have to leave your water running? The one we had before hooked up to the hose and you turned it on and it just ran. Was yours automatic?

No, I leave it running it just doesn't take much water to make two misters work. Since you are on a well I can see though that even if they used very little water they would make your pump motor run more than you want. I was just trying to make the point that the misters with the fan do a good job for my birds. Have you thought about going solar? Kern

Yeah we have really been considering it. We had someone from solar city out but they said they couldn't do enough to cover our whole bill. They also wanted to take our tax write off. We decided not to go with them but I found another place called integrity that I like alot more. We are planning on making an appointment eventually lol.

We turned our solar on just yesterday at my hardware store. Kind of a no brainer for me. Payback is in 3.5 years and free power for more than the next 20 years after that. We bought our system outright, no lease. I think that is the way to go for sure if you can swing it financially. We borrowed the money for the solar which was added to a huge refinance of our other debt. Kern
