California - Northern

Anyone interested in splitting the cost of bantam chicks? I found them on Ideal Poultry, and they're only $1.10 each w/o shipping and handling. Located in Hollister, California, and willing to drive an 1hr away to deliver chicks to splitter.

Yeah but it's the shipping that cost so much lol.
We bought silkies from mypetchicken. Its was like 60 dollars for the chicks but we paid almost 100 to have them shipped. It's highway robbery..

Im looking for a good meat bird from a hatchery (plan to order around 15 in early spring) Im hesitant to go Cornish Rock because I want to take them out to 14 weeks. But I was watching some video of some cornish rocks that were older and they seemed healthy chickeny birds (if quite large). Does someone have a suggestion for a different bird that would be decent sized at 14 weeks. I know the cornish crosses will be huge by then.

I just am trying to do my homework I plan on hatching delaware and Pita Pinta again next year along with raising out some Ark Blues and Barred Hollands.

My hatched birds will go out to 24 weeks for processing so the meat birds are to supplement my own production. Id really like to see if how much of my own chicken I can raise in just my back yard.

Check with the hatcheries. They often have slower to mature breeds. McMurray has a cornish roaster that takes an extra two weeks along with Red Ranger Broiler and a Pioneer breed that is in the 12 to 14 week range.

I've had Red Rangers (from MMH) in the past and they were great. Very meaty but with good livability, and hens were decent layers of maybe 3-4 eggs a week. Very sweet and docile and easy to handle. They were ready for butcher at about 6-8 pounds at 14ish weeks. They didn't have the crazy double wide breast of a Cornish Cross, but they felt similar to my Standard Dark Cornish except rangierand longer legged. I bred some nice crossbreeds with them as my DP roosters as well. Only word of warning if you keep any for breeding, do not keep the cocks with other breeds of hens. They're fine with other Red Rangers but they will crush standard laying hens... learned that the hard way.

Cornish Cross CAN be kept out to 14 weeks... but it's not pretty. Out of 10 birds 5 couldn't walk by 14 weeks and 2 more were having serious trouble getting around. 2 were healthy as could be and I almost considered keeping one to see if she might be breedable. I had them professionally processed by a local guy because I had to go out of town. He threatened to charge me the turkey price if I ever brought those monsters to him again...

Thanks maybe Ill gets some Cornish to go at 10 weeks. And some Rangers to Go at 14 since Ill be processing them myself and grow them out together.

I wont breed these I just want to compare them with growing out Dels and Pitas. next year. My 20 week dels right now are quite nice size. Pitas are smaller birds so I let them go to 24 weeks.
