Is Placerville traffic ever good? It seems like a mess everytime I go through there. (which admittedly isn't very often) I will admit it...................I get lost every time I have to find somewhere in Placerville. The streets don't have good signs for us foreigners.
I wasn't speaking specifically to your situation, as I don't know the situation you are in. (sorry if I missed it)

I'm just extra careful with my flock, which is why I choose not to show my birds (you never know what they will bring home). If I ever show a bird, I will do so planning to never plan on bringing that bird home. I'm just too paranoid about diseases and it isn't worth it to me to infect my whole flock because someone else has a sick bird. Again, that's just my opinion. It's also why I choose to have a closed flock and I'm VERY careful who I get eggs from. I no longer take in adult birds..........no exceptions.

I'm proud of Amy's situation because she has taken the hard choices to ensure her flock is healthy. I have seen other people refuse to make the hard decision, even though their birds are carriers for life. (I'm not saying yours are)
locals go around town. missouri flat south to pleasant valley rd. to cedar ravine or newtown rd's that takes you to the east side of Pville as we call it
never mess with the freeway.

I gave in last night and put them in the brooder. Here are my 5 babies.

So cute! Glad you got them out. Good luck on getting some more but five is a nice hatch.

Quote: The eggs are from Ron Fogelly. He has been working with one of the old lines(1920ish) for several years and is getting them into real good shape.

These are the ones I posted about a couple of weeks ago and said they would be good to use in a Rhodebar project. I was not kidding

. Ron has offered to send me 15 more hatching eggs for the cost of shipping. I could contact him and see if he still has his breeding pens set up.

I was reminded of the breed back to RIR project when I saw a picture of a Rhodebar standing next to a Hatchery RIR. I thought how sad. What a beautiful Rhodebar you could get if you bred them to a nice Brick shaped Mahogany RIR like I have in my back yard...

Ron
yes, that's what I was looking for. I do like the shape on my main roo, he does kind of look like a brick and I really like one pullet who has a nice deep red. The rest IMO need some work and I would love to try to bring in that rich color!!

my broody started hathcing her chicks, 2 this evening when I was checking for eggs. Kept meaning to candle them, well I guess my question was answered...they are hatching.. NOW! we'll see how she does raising them. :)

Oh, ok. Amy Beth was commenting on my situation so I thought you were too.

I totally agree with culling over keeping a carrier for life. I had told my husband to cull them all when he got home from work but then when I did more research I didn't read anything that said these particular problems would result in carriers. I won't repost my situation and bore everyone, I'll just take your post applied to Amy Beth and not my situation.

Very exciting! If she hasn't hurt them yet, she'll be ok. I love watching broodies raise their chicks.

There isn't a lot on the topic really in depth because most farmers tend to cull so there is a lack of data on long term 'saving' of the ill ones or ones exposed but not ill. Because of that I am simply culling the ones with symptoms and feel that the ones who managed to come through unscathed must have stronger immune systems and I assume (maybe ignorantly or smartly not sure yet) that I would want that bred into my future flock. So I am not worried about carriers either really- just need to get the sicks ones gone. I personally was concerned with them shedding the mold by sneezing or coughing (I didn't research that though) or pooping and just lower immune systems in general. It's tough to think through some of this. Some illnesses are much more cut and dry so your path is much clearer.

I hope that everyone remaining is healthy so you don't have to make any more touch calls (or culls).

I think one of my ducks laid a wind/fart egg. It's so tiny! We haven't cracked it open yet. it's a funny looking egg. I should take a pic!

One thing that I am noticing so far is my duck eggs are NOT larger than chicken eggs. Maybe because we are like 6 weeks into laying and they are still young layers but the egg sizes are fairly consistent and about the size of a decent sized chicken egg. I was hoping for some big honking eggs! LOL

Hi Amy,

That funny little egg thing is probably the first or pre egg from one of your ducks.

Congratulations!

Ron
