Talking about Barred Rocks, does anyone on here have non-hatchery birds?  The teen who helps take care of my breeding flocks of Pita PInta and Langshan is interested in breeding them.  He has a very small flock but they are hatchery birds.  He wants to breed them for eggs and meat.

I know of someone with White Rocks, exhibition line. I could contact her and she if she has any extra. She's usually hatching this time of year.

Neal was researching barred Rocks a while ago and found that its really hard to get quality birds here on the west coast. Most of the breeders wont give up good stock. Now if you are just raising dual purpose birds that might be ok. You should talk to Neal and he may have some of his contacts.

I have a couple that I use if I need extra indoor ones.  The only thing that I don't like about them is that the chicks kick pine shavings out and make a huge mess.  I need to find something to line sides up another 4-6 in in order to prevent that.

They were talking about using the clear Saran Wrap type stuff but it stretches and you can pull it tight. Let me find the name.

No, but I have a bunch of English Orpington cockerels if he wants to breed them. They seem to be really good dual purpose birds so far; they get really big. My 8 month old Orpington pullet is HUGE now. She is pretty skittish but we had to catch her the other day to dust her for mites & I think she weighs as much as one of my kids, lol.

Have you tried the pour on ivermectin? It is for cattle but you can use it for chickens for lice. Not sure on the dosage,I can check

Can you put permethrin dust on 4 week old chicks?  I just found out we have mites.

In know the advice comes late but we use one drop of ivermectin pour on, on chicks successfully for mites.

I thought ivermecin was a dewormer.
Does it handle both jobs?

It will treat some poultry worms, like large roundworms, and maybe cecal worms, but not capillary worms.

Not sure if it will treat mites, and I say that because I was just talking to someone that gave ivermectin and two days later their birds still had mites. 

Yes it does treat lice, mites and some worms. For a bad mite infestation you have to retreat weekly for 3 weeks and ofcoase the coop. It has worked for small mite outbreaks in my broodys in the past but recently I decided to switch it up so the bugs wont build up a resistance. Also ivermectin can cause birth defects and I'm pregnant. My doctor advised me not to use it for now to be safe. If hatching you need to wait for the two week egg withdrawal before incubating eggs. It can also cause birth defects in chicks. Same with eating eggs. 2 weeks. I've done alot of research as this has been our primary for poultry lice and mites.

I repeat myself: Why not just use elemental sulphur??? It is harmless, easy to use and works. No need to work the whole coop over or poison anyone...
