I seriously have this on my calender to meet up with you in January. I simply can't wait to pick up some hatching eggs. The more I talk to my family about them (and my poor friends- chicken keeprs some but mostly not lol) the more excited I become. Thanksgiving...Christmas...then Mille Fleur Leghorns! haha
mille fleur's are so pretty

It's official now!
Congrats! The ultimate validation!

I know you've shown them before, but I can't remember, how many do you have? Rooster too? Are you going to start breeding so you can share your lovely birds?
I hatched 7 chicks. Three pullets and 4 Cockerels. The boys were rehomed and I kept the three pullets. Already one of them is very nice. The other 2 are nice too. I can't wait to see how they develop.

I am getting another 24 eggs from the breeder to hatch at the end of January. I hope to find a place to keep roos and will have to pick which 2 of my breeds I want to work with. I might work on the Amelia project(Penedesenca Cream Legbar crosses = Olive Eggers) and the RIRs. The other possibilities are Partridge Penes and Basque Hens. It will be hard to pick between these 4. The RIRs are very close to SOP. I could ruin them though. It is quite a responsibility to keep an Heritage breed in the SOP and Show Quality range.

Yes, I imagine it's quite a mission to work with a heritage breed. All the ones you mention sound worthy, but those RIRs are not something you see very often (

anymore!). Wish it was easier to keep roosters.

Last week I found a broody Hen hiding in the bushes. She had about a dozen eggs under her. I moved her to a broody box in hopes she would continue sitting.
NOPE! She freaked out. She no longer wanted ANYTHING to do with all those eggs. At this point the eggs had gotten fairly cold. I brought them in the house and candled them. The eggs were dark green. Very hard to candle. I could see growth, but couldn't tell if they were still alive. I went ahead a put them in the incubator for the heck of it. I check them a few times during the week to see if I could see anything. I thought I saw movement in one. I didn't know if it was wishful thinking. So I put them back in and thought I would give it a few more days... Today I came home to 5 chicks chirping around in the hatchery ...:)
That was a unexpected surprise ...I will give the other eggs a few more days..;)

I really like the uniqueness of those Heritage RIR.
I want to work on important projects and this important to our American history. The Basques are a mainstay for me because they are also apart of my heritage. Soon im going to make a list of around 15 breeds to seriously work and improve on over the course of the nest few Years.

I might buy some of those eggs too when i get the new bator!

AS OF THIS MORNING 7 CHICKS! They came from olive eggs. It looks like a least two are pretty little blue chicks... Odd because the Mommy was brown tones... This was my mixed flock so ...Who's your Daddy... I will try to snap a picture before work :)

I am at a quandary. Do I build more pens??? or let a project go???? I am quite sure I am asking the wrong group of people, but I think I will like your answer better than if I ask my DH
