California - Northern

This weather is a bear.  At least I don't have the contractor here today, first day in six weeks without my doors open and men walking in and out.  I'm actually to the point of being able to put some stuff away today.:celebrate

I heard a loud noise last night around midnight that made the dogs all bark.  I haven't ventured out into the rain yet today to investigate.

I'm glad I didn't lose power last night, my hatch is started (not to mention two more incubators of eggs still cooking).  Out so far, three seramas (including one out of an egg so small it looked like a quail egg), a blue silkie and a blue showgirl.  :love   Several more pips, they were actually due today, so lots of time yet.

Hope everyone is making it through the rain/wind without too much damage (sorry about the hoop coops).

Deb

Hope all is well after the storm!

How exciting! Good luck on your hatch!

Thanks for the info on the ducks Ron! They sound like a very nice duck to have around. Maybe ill get a couple when I things slow down a little.
Theyat would be soo nice in the pond.

Quote: I have mine set up with a car battery, charger and adapters that plug into the genesis 1588. The battery was a bit expensive but the Genesis 1588 runs on 12 volts! The battery should power it for about 16 hours. During bad storms, I attach the battery charger and then then adapters, so it all runs off of the charging battery. If the power goes out, it all keeps running. I can plug into a cars power port too.
Quote: Yes! They are very friendly too. They jump up onto my shoulder sometimes, so I have to be careful.

I am fairly sure these two and the Barred Rocks are the only ones laying now(I get a pullet egg each day, but they are already almost as big as the Hen eggs). It is sad to have such a low lay rate now. I turned the timer on for the lights, so I should start getting more next week.

This thing does move fast and hard to keep track of post. It seems like with this weather we are having , having Brody hens is almost non existing. I'm intereste in making a homemade incubator and have started to post on the incubating section does anyone have success with homemade incubators ?

My first hatch out of a homemade incubator wasn't a disaster. It was almost 50% with shipped eggs while doing a ton of things wrong. I thought what I lost was because their was no fan and all the eggs closest to the heat source didn't make it, but on my next hatch I added a fan and none of them made it. :(

Now I'm scared to try again since everything I want to hatch is so darned expensive!

In other words it can be done, but I would definitely recommend not using a water heater thermostat and figuring out your fan so the temperature is better regulated.

Also, start out with a test hatch before you spend money on high dollar eggs.

Welcome to BYC! I'm a nube too, been stalking this thread for months before I finally caught up. :)

OMG, that is funny!

Nice! My barred rock has been very consistent since she started laying. My worst layer is my brown leghorn. This I was not expecting!

My duckies should be here today! Went to the store and grabbed some extra flockraiser and feeder. Got my rooster booster electrolytes ready, extra heat lamps...let's do this! :D I don't know if I should call the PO and check on them or wait for them to call me. The wait is killing me!

Even when I get a bator- I still would prefer a pro like Jeff to hatch them for me. I will be getting some MF Leghorn eggs from Cheryl in January and no way do I want to mess those up. At all. I will probably practice on my duck eggs in the Spring and sell off my barnyard cuties because I don't want to keep mixed ducks.

So if anyone here in interested in barnyard mix ducks...keep me in mind! LOL Gotta experiment somehow! :D
