Last post for now lol. My kids named their chickens.

Show Girl roo - Phoenix
Silkie - Letters
Frizzle - Isabel

My 4 year old named hers Letters. ahaha So cute and funny. The kids are very excited to have a pet chicken. They were not allowed to name any chickens up to this point so they are excited to have their OWN chicken that is immune to the stewpot. haha!
Nice names!
I love my new little Partridge silkie chicks... hatched out over the last 2 days. They look like little balls of fluff! I had some very bad luck hatching and used my little Brinsea Mini for a hatcher this time. (still incubated in my styrofoam incubator), Cant wait to try my Brinsea 20 for my next hatch!

And I am relieved that my White Silkie pullet that was shipped to me and was injured during shipping is doing better and was able to be moved to the coop yesterday and introduced to the ""girls" They were all piled on the floor last night to sleep :) When she got here she was flattened out on the bottom of the box wings over her head and unable to stand. A rooster in the same box is limping but was ok. I feel sure the box must have been dropped. She enjoyed being a "house chicken" for a while :)

She is very nice looking and the chicks look great!

It is always so nice to lessen the number of chickens! My chicken chores were much easier this morning.

Now I need to get those cockerels off to American Poultry for processing and another group will be empty!

I think I will go hang out at the Forum Home Page and answer un answered posts during my lunch hour. Does anyone want to join me? It is a lot of fun and maybe I can get into the top ten posters today.

Your partridge silkies are really adorable. I have one partridge pullet (9 months old and no eggs) named Cinnamuffin........she has the BEST type of all my silkies! I really want to start a partridge pen eventually. Where did you get your hatching eggs from? I plan on starting a hatch next week.

Aww, how sad about your new silkies getting injuries during shipping. But it is GREAT that they are doing better. The white one is very pretty.

These chicks are from my Partridge pair.. my only girl old enough to lay lol! Love your girls name!!! I have a lovely Parti Rooster and two hens. Cant wait for the other one to be old enough to start laying! Hoping to have some nice babies!

Love the names :) How nice they all have their own special one :)

That is wonderful that they are from your own chickens. Hatching eggs can get expensive. I have only one blue silkie that is laying eggs (and she has 2 splash roosters that are more than obliging to mate her!). My only concern is that they might be overbreeding her. Lately I give them time together and time apart. The poor girl needs some quiet time! Now that I know they are fertile I am saving up her eggs and plan to incubate them next week like you do with your parti-silkies.

I would love to get some partridge eggs to put in the bator with my Mysty Blues' eggs. Cinnamuffin was from BBS hatching eggs so she might be a blue partridge. Either way, she has always been a favorite and I want more partidge.

Your little partridge flock is perfect. They are all nice and fluffy and seem to have great type too! If you have any "extra" eggs you can't incubate (and you can't bring yourself to eat) let me know.

I was trying to put some together for another hatch and she just stopped laying .. ugh.. hopefully it will pick up again. Dont know what I will have anytime soon but will have some in the spring for sure :) I decided to try and start with some nice birds from good breeders instead of hatching eggs because I figured I could buy them and know more what I would have and then go from there. I am always tempted to buy eggs though... I am wanting some good quality blacks and cant find what I want... I would keep my little pullet and roosters apart some of the time. Today I have all my girls out and the boys all inside.

Maybe by spring both of your parti-girls will be laying and you'll have twice as many eggs!! (Party-girls

....you know what I mean!) Hopefully we can work something out.

That is a good idea about buying full grown "quality" silkies. I've purchased about 5 dozen hatching silkie eggs at different times. And, I end up trying to re-home more than half because they are boys or have faults..........But, it has been fun too.

That's good to know about others keeping them apart too. Do you keep the boys inside a coop or a barn all day ? Do you think it'd be OK if I kept my 2 boys inside their pen (2'X4') in the garage all day? I'm sure it won't kill them and it would sure give Mysty Blue a break.

Quote: Yes, they will be ok. For Breeding, move the boys into the pen with the girls for an hour each afternoon. You have to do this if your ratio of hens to roos is too small. Of course you could get saddles for them but oh my! Ok not going to say more about that....

haha, yes, Party Girls for sure :) I am hoping for lots of eggs !!! Also some of my chicks will go.. cant keep them all for sure! I also bought some eggs right at the start ( this is my second go round with silkies I had them up until about 8 yrs ago and am getting re-established) Figured this time I would have a few pets lol! That lasted until I hatched my first eggs! :) So set about finding some that were going to get me going more quickly. I DID end up with a few from good breeders that someone else hatched and i bought. Even most of those are gone because I cut back on colors as well. Like you I ended up rehoming most of them. I decided to buy some from good breeders to make pairs/trios of the colors I am breeding. I am only set up to keep 15-30 birds reasonably. My boys are in the coop but I rotate them out in a separate pen . I will be sorting out who to keep with who in the spring. It wont hurt them to stay in. When mine are in the coop i usually leave the door and windows open so they get some fresh air. Two boys in a 2x4 all the time is pretty small so I would try and get them out some or make up a larger portable pen in the garage for daytime and let them sleep in the small one.
