Suer super happy!

Mine all lay their eggs in the afternoon. I don't have any today, but got 9 yesterday, including 2 from the 4 Basque hens.

Post a picture! I don't think I have seen an egg from D'uccle yet!

Wow - that is a beautiful BIG incubator... and it might not care if my external temperatures don't hold steady. I wish.... Ooooh, that Blue Partridge Silkie is exactly what I want... :drool :love If you happen to get any partridge Silkie Roos you don't want to keep .. or if there is any way I can get some eggs from you for the partridge silkies when one of my silkies go broody again .. :fl Oh dear, chicken math strikes again.. where can I put another separated pen for just silkies..
I do have a partridge black boy I'm holding to rehome. He is not top notch but he is friendly. Someone is picking up some breeding roos from me Sunday. If you really want a partridge boy let me know today and I can give her black instead.
I was thinking the same thing! Congratulations! They look very happy and healthy!
What appended to your pullet power ron?save it for cooper I guess.
Farmers gotta have a Truck! Good job selling the Civic! They have the highest resale value of any car. I have a 2005 with 80,000 miles on it. It is funny when I drive it to swap chickens or pick up Chicken feed.
I have a CNG civic. 190000 miles and still great. It is amazing how much better a car lasts when you don't put regular gas in it.
I've really enjoyed reading about all these hatchlings going on. The chick pictures are adorable. My Americauna has gone broody in the last several days. Part of me would love to get her some eggs to set on, but the thought of raising fragile chicks in this freezing and often rainy weather seems crazy. So, I'll just live vicariously through those that are hatching. Would love to meet other chicken people in the Davis area to learn more as I'm new to this year nice Mar of 2012. Happy new year! Lea
A few eggs or chick and she will be fine. I'm trying to decide if my silkie gets eggs or chicks
Yes from olive eggeers I hatched last year. Can't actually even remember where they came from. Someday they will get their own pen and then I would have some for you. But for now they are in with my Marans. What does a Marans roo over oe hen produce egg wise? Do they just get darker anyone know?
It will make the brown coating darker on the OE egg as long as the hen has darker eggs herself. But it is less dramatic then the first addition.
Ahh, these chick pictures keep making me want to hatch. :( I'll need more pen space and property though.
Quail can be in a chicken pen as long as they are not on the floor or exposed to chicken poo. or on a balcony, they take very little space. you'll never notice and in 8-10 weeks you get eggs.
got a different-looking egg this morning, so now at least three of my girls are laying -- and this one is so beautifully speckled!
That is a marans egg. I get coating like that when their paint blaster does not go full boar. They coat it wiht missing spots. Sometimes it means the egg shell is not quite as dense in every place, so I make sure they have enough oyster shell.

Yay for first eggs! in winter! it is a double win. Note to self: never try and multi quote on the phone. I had to go on the computer to finish.

When showing OEG's that are hatched prior to Nov of the prior year, (I think that's the cut off date-not positive), males are to be dubbed.

The comb, wattles, and earlobes are to be cut back, This is described in the SOP. If there was a fight between males there is less chance of losing a bird to blood loss, nothing to get ahold of.

I thought about raising them a few years ago but couldn't see myself doing the dubbing. Really couldn't pass them on to other 4-H kids either.

Modern games are dubbed also, there may be more breeds that I don't know of that require it for showing.
But if it was planned to be able to show them, why wasn't he dubbed when he was little? That is the part I don't understand.

I took a bunch of photos yesterday and thought I would share them. These pictures are of my "Pet" pen, an eclectic group of mis-matched chickens breeds and a few other random shots.

Ron, do you have basque roos you are trying to rehome? on deanne? I have someone who might need some in a month or so, not sure yet.
Yes, I have two basque roos I held back from my rooster guy. Both look like breeder quality with bold yellow legs and nice coloring. They are 11 weeks, so I would like to keep em both til they are 5-6 months to decide which I am going to keep. I would be happy to see the other go into a breeding program. I will try to get pictures of both boys soon.

First off - from one newbie to another -

I have never had my Americauna (Easter Eggers on this site if bought from the hatcheries) go broody on me, so I have no idea how good of mothers they would be. I have owned this type of chickens for probably 20 years... Ameraucanas (note the U) are supposed to be good broodies and mothers, but I don't have any of these yet - they are coming from a breeder later this year. If you want to find out which breed you have.. check here: http://www.ameraucana.org/faq.html

I just had one Phoenix broody and hatch 3 chicks in late November, early December. I checked her to see how she would handle being moved around by picking her up at night to check for new eggs under her, she went back to setting so I decided she was serious and I would be able to move her. When the first chick hatched I brought her in and put her on the front covered porch in a small "broody cage" that I used to use for store bought chicks.

Warning - the Broody Poop is noxious! She only got of the nest once a day to go poop, I put food and water within her reach so she wouldn't loose too much weight sitting on the nest.

I then had a Silkie decide to go broody, so I transferred them all around - now the Phoenix is out in the grow-out pen with her three chicks and the Silkie is in the Broody Cage with her 4. I still bring the Silky and chicks in at night though - they are only about a week old.
