Hi all, can not believe I just discovered this thread! We moved up to Grass Valley area over the summer and have been in Chicken Heaven ever since (sadly some of them went to chicken heaven as well -- its been tough transitioning our dogs to livestock)-- we got 6 chicks, then ordered a minimum hatch of 15 = 21 total, and are now down to 11! But number holding steady since November so hopefully it will be all good from here-- they just started laying a month ago its been GREAT!
Def. you cant go wrong with a bigger coop!

It is great to meet you! Yes, six is a nice start. That is how many I started with and look at me now! I just set 18 eggs and have 10 more on their way. I hope the Small Animal Exchange starts up sooner than April this year...

I want every one that I see! I was told yesterday that serious breeders only keep one or two breeds. I live in town so I can't even breed one now. Of course I hope to keep Some Roosters in the Country soon. Is that the first step to moving to the County?

The 18 eggs I set last night are a mix of Marans hens with an EE and a Marans Roo. Maybe some Dark egg layers or Olive Egg layers.

Hogwash on the breeds. Especially just a few. personally I just breed a few because that is all I can and want to handle. I have seen people do good work with more than 3 or 4
now I will have numerous breeds in the layer flock. My first batch of CL X CP olive eggers is a 6 to 1 rooster hen ratio. Not the best way to start

Jason, I have a question for you. How did you prepare your chickens for the move to a different property? Maybe I should ask, "Did you do anything to get the chickens' immune systems ready for the move?" There is also the stress factor which vitamins/electrolytes can help, but I've always heard that each property/location will have a totally different soil content, different organisms, etc. I'm just curious if there is a way to beef up their bodies ahead of time in preparation instead of just packing them up and unloading them onto new land. Like maybe getting shovel fulls of the "new soil" and adding it to their area so they could scratch through it? I'd love to hear ideas or experience for moving a whole flock of chickens....

Just kidding. I give my chickens ACV and the same vitamins you posted to Ron. Just like when you bring in a new bird you keep them in the coop a few days then out in the covered run they go. There has not been chickens here but if they start to get that puffy feeling I will give them Corrid or Sulmet.
I think it may be easier on them because they are all going at once and now having had adult birds shipped I know nothing will be that hard on them.

I was wondering more about exposing them to the new soil. Is that not usually an issue? If not -good, I'm worrying for nothing.

As for the vitamins & electrolytes I found a great (and cheap) source at the Echo Valley Ranch Feed Store in Auburn made by Agri Labs. It is a 4 oz. pouch of powder that you add to their water. It's enough for 128 gallons of water so I just sprinkle enough in each waterer to turn it yellowish-orange. I bought it 5 months ago and still have 1/3 left. It is only $2.69. I was looking for an alternative to the Sav-A-Chick vitamins because they are so expensive. This stuff can be used on livestock and poultry.

I use this daily with Apple Cider Vinegar. Oh and I give some to the chickens daily to.

Anybody in Grass Valley or close by?

Right here we're 3 miles away, our flock of 11 Jersey Giants are laying well (7 eggs for 10 hens daily)... Cant wait to see if we can hatch out chicks this year it seems hard (none of my hens seems to be broody so far but it is still winter).....
