Bator baby help, please! I just can't decide whether or not to hatch the eggs I have incubating lying on their sides, like I do now, or use an egg carton during lockdown. What seems to be better??

Good luck with your hatch! Please post picture ..

The life cycle of a chicken---
I'm a homeschooling mother to a 10 year old girl. I would like to do an extended science project starting with our incubation. I have some questions already to add to a report for her to do, but I'm wondering if anybody could help me ask pertinent questions.
I'm starting with: what is a hygrometer? what does pipping & zipping mean? what is candling? how do you do it & what are you supposed to see on days 7, 14 & 18. etc..

Any help is greatly appreciated :)

Click the link in my signature. All of your questions and more are there:

hygrometer measures humididt
pipping is the breaking of the inner membrane and then the shell.
zipping is the chick using the beak tooth to open up the shell to hatch

Day 7, 14 and 18 is for checking the size of the air cell at the big end of the egg. first you see veining. Then you see movement and the at the end you see darkness. All are good to see.

Good hatching!

I would use white eggs for hatching, easier to see into than brown eggs. Some people weigh the eggs during incubation to gauge lockdown. What are the 7 parts of the egg, and how they are used during development? I found while waiting Ihad all kinds of questions that came up on there own.

Rough day yesterday so I grabbed my camera and took a bunch of pictures of my chickens. Hanging out with the chickens and taking photos always makes me feel better.

Stay away from SoyBean oil too. It's in a lot of processed food. I do not eat much processed food.
We try to stay away from processed food, also. The fewer ingredients, the better! My 11 year old daughter has become my label reader especially when I can't find my glasses!
