Hello all!

I have some chicks hatching in the bator as I type this, and I'm preparing their brooder. I'm wondering what "color" heat bulb you prefer? I usually use a "white" bulb, but now I want to keep their sleeping pattern undisturbed. I've heard there are red bulbs, black bulbs, yellow bulbs and blue bulbs, but I'm not sure which would be the best one?

The Frizzle gene is passed on. When one shows up with it, you just breed for it. It is the specialty of some people to breed Frizzles. Someone in SF has Frizzle Black Australorps!
Frizzles used to confuse me but I've learned to look past the curls when trying to figure out where they need to be caged. Barred rock is a barred rock even if it's frizzled.

Finally figured out bantam classes also-only took 3 years.

Use the red bulb--it keeps them from pecking each other they say.

I use the Brinsea Eco Glow if I have less than 20 chicks hatch.

I prefer the ceramic reptile bulbs. They are safer (would be hard to break) and last for years :)

Hey!!!!!!!!!!!

I never had any interest in keeping silkies either................until I got some. They are the sweetest birds I have. When I was bathing/blow drying for the last show, I looked at my DH and said, I could get rid of everything else and just keep these!

Come over to the dark side.................you'll never go back!

Yours is especially pretty! If I had room I would have some

What happens to the feathers if you breed a sizzle to a silkie. Does the feathering change or is one trait more dominant than the other?

Another question...to get a Sizzle...that is a mutt right? I know Silkie goes into it. Frizzle is merely a gene/trait not a breed (correct?)...so what breed/s of chicken do people use to make Sizzles?

Silkie + ? = Sizzle

And to further that. Do Sizzles breed true or are they more like crosses. The only exist when you cross a breed?

Sorry, I don't have any experience with sizzles. I'd have to just do a search on the genes involved.

Frizzling in a modifying gene that can be applied to any breed. As said above, a BR is a BR, whether it is frizzled or smooth.

Frizzles aren't my favorite, although I have frizzled seramas and one frizzled tolbunt polish. Frizzled seramas are cute enough, but I don't care for the frizzled look in polish. To my eye, it messes up the main feature of the breed, the crest. It makes them look like a chrysanthemum. A picture from when she was very young. Originally I kept this bird because I only had four tolbunt. I was afraid it would be my only one of one sex or the other. Fortunately, my group turned out to be a cockerel and three pullets. I'll probably end up selling this girl at some point.

Thanks!

I have been eyeing the Eco Glow, and now I am saving up egg money to buy it.

I have a few questions about it though... Is it sturdy? Does it last long?

Quote: I have the large ecoglow and I like it well enough. The legs sometimes are a bit of a pain, they are constantly changing settings on their own. I just need to mess with them, but haven't taken the time.

I've seen a few people talk about these heaters and say they like them even better.

I believe they are less expensive too.
