Quote: Silky chickens were in the mystery basket on the Halloween episode last year.

I saw that too. The one that irritates me is every once in a while the basket ingredient is Araucana eggs. Then some nitwit contestant will talk about how they taste different.............................it's a shell people!!!!! Don't give information if you don't know what you are talking about!!!!

Wow, they are super cool looking. I love the mille fleur ribbons running down the pullets hackles.

I think we should all joint venture and write a Dr. Seus book called, "The Frizzled Frazzeled Sizzled Zazzled Silkie"

Here I will start......

The Frizzled Frazzeled Zizzled Zazzled silkie went with her friend Fredda Frilkie to the Razzle Dazzle Raffle wearing a Fiddly Faddley Frock while eating a Wiggly Waggly Worm...

Ok... next person.... take it from here.
Ok, I tried, that is not topable.

Use the red bulb--it keeps them from pecking each other they say.

I use the Brinsea Eco Glow if I have less than 20 chicks hatch.
Do you like the Eco Glow? I bought one but realized I did not like it because I can't goo goo gaa gaa over the chicks when they are under it. I also wonder if it keep them warm enough when I put them in the part at 2 weeks. I would love to hear your pros and cons.

I prefer the ceramic reptile bulbs. They are safer (would be hard to break) and last for years :)
Interesting. I have never heard of the ceramic bulbs. I Heat bulbs break way too easily, and sometimes burn out in the middle of the night which is really scary when the chicks are young. What is a ceramic bulb? Does it give off light or just heat?

Thanks!

I have been eyeing the Eco Glow, and now I am saving up egg money to buy it.

I have a few questions about it though... Is it sturdy? Does it last long?
I am not thrilled with mine, in fact I only used it for 1 day and gave up. I really don't like the fact that the chicks go under it and you can't see them. Also, the chicks grow so fast I feel like you would constantly need to adjust the legs. I often raise bantams and LF together so adjusting the height just right may be tricky. I would love to hear other peoples opinions on it. I want to love it.

My brooders are entered from the top. I plan to build new side entrance brooders. I believe the EG are better if you have a side entrance to your brooder so atleast you can look under it to make sure the chicks are OK

The Eco Glow is a contact heater and works like a mother hen. I think the chickens do much better with it and, wait for it, they pay for themselves in electrical costs in just a couple of months!

They run under it to get warm and then run back out so you do get to see them. If the room you are in is less than 50 degrees you might have a problem. I say might because mine are in the garage and it gets pretty cold in there at night. They learn to not be afraid of the dark and get into a more natural rhythm of day and night.

I adjust mine twice before they stop using it. My problem is if I hatch more than will fit under it. They to manage but it is funny to see the fluffy butts hanging out from under it. The chicks I hatched from your OEs used the eco glow 20. They stopped using it at about 5 weeks old. Tough little buggers....

Oh Jason..................you have another chick this morning. Now that I've seen this one, the first was definitely a girl and this is a boy. It's almost all gray. Everything is still quiet with the second egg, so I don't know about it. We're now on day 23.

Deb
yeah...now to just come get them. will this weekend work for you Deb? sorry about that. just sons Guitar tomorrow then cub scouts Thursday.

I just put 4 eggs from my LF BLRWs, 6 eggs from my bantam BLRWs and 4 eggs from my EEs (pure wheaten x pure buff Ameraucanas) into lockdown. The chicks from the EE eggs are up for grabs. I might be convinced to sell the LF BLRW chicks (Foley x Greg Catt lines) if someone really wants them

I am trying to build up my bantam BLRW flock, so the bantam chicks are not available at this time.

I want some of those eggs :)
