California - Northern

The last couple of days my BSL, (Erica, named after my husband Eric), has been hanging out in the nest box when I feed in the morning. She's my largest layer and have been watching her just because her temperment is a little different. She was still in the nest box this afternoon, put an egg in front of her and she bulldozed it under, same with the other 5 I had in my pocket. Really, going broody for the first time in 5 years! I watch and see how she does, she may end up with the 16 BLRW's sitting on the table.
When I went out to close up the coops Erica was on the roost rather than the box, so no broody. I'm sure it won't be long until a partridge rock or four go broody in the other flock.

So pretty! What sweet looking girls. My aunt raised a Muscovy (well three, not sure what happened to the other two) named Precious who turned out not only to be male, but a guard duck. He would fly out and attack joggers and bikers passing by on their road! Poor Precious, he ended up having to live with the chickens.

Zooweemama - Thank you so much for all the information!! I'll make sure to post pictures in another few weeks (let's be honest, they're adorable, it will probably be sooner

Yeah, from those pictures I definitely think that we've got Pekins. I'm so excited! But I guess that means I'll have to get runners later on down the line

OMG, I am exhausted.  I just finished the last of bathing 25 chickens for this weekend.  The last five were silkies, so they also had to be blown dry.............

:bow   I am SO glad I am finished.  Tomorrow I just have to pack up and make the 3.5 hour drive to coop-in.  I can't tell you how good the hotel in beautiful downtown Fresno is starting to look.  It will mean I'm DONE!  And as my schoolteacher DH always says......................turkeys are done, people are finished............but believe me, I am DONE.

Lol that must be why I always say......stick a fork in me....I am done!!!! :)

If I had to go on personality alone- Pekins are by far my most favorite duck to have. They are silly. Friendly and goofy. That's why after all our other breeds get phased out we will only be left with Appleyards and Pekins. :D The Runners are stunning and regal birds too. I appreciate their beauty.

I made Lava Cakes for dessert tonight. Oh my sweet heaven. To die for yummy. Uses a lot of egg though. 2 eggs and 2 yolks just for 4 little cakes. I have to double that for my big crew but it was crazy easy and yummy. For the wow factor alone it was just too easy lol. My tummy is going to explode!

Quote: When I was a little kid my dad got me a couple of ducklings and they actually bonded to me. They followed me in a line ( like I was their momma)...sat in my lap etc. I caught live minnows in the pond for them and put them in the bathroom sink. They would go crazy diving in the sink after those minnows until they were too stuffed to eat any more. I would then blow dry them with my mom's hairdryer on the bathroom counter and help them groom themselves...My mom hated it LOL. Once they got bigger my parents decided they should live in the pond...they didn't make a single night:(

But I guess I got them very young and had all the time in the world to bond with them during summer vacation. I later tried goslings with the same result (they thought I was their momma), but a fox got them after they got too big and had to live in the barn. Dad tried to get me another gosling and it was too old to bond to humans. He turned out to be a horrible pet and attacked everything that moved, but fell obscenely in love with a pickup truck

We had two Pilgrim Toulouse geese, Hank & Heather. My parents live next door and had an old Cadillac with big huge chrome bumpers and Hank was in LOVE with that Cadillac. Every morning when my Dad tried to go to work Hank would chase him back into the house!

I'd get the phone call to come get my ^&%# goose so my Dad could go to work! I'd go out and holler for Hank and he'd come waddling home but dang did he love that Cadillac!
