You want to order Regional A1 and Regional B1 - they are top lading. The 2's are side loading and don't work for eggs.

thanks! i will do my best -- except that i'm still puzzled by how to deal with separating the broody from the flock, if that's necessary -- i only have the one coop at this point. i suppose i could set up a box/pen for her in the garage, but would prefer to keep all the chickens outdoors -- and i could get a small tractor-type pen, but i'm worried it won't be nearly as predator-proof as the big coop/run is.

does anyone just leave the broody in with the rest of the flock?

I do. Unless the broody hen(s) set up housekeeping in the grow out coop, which makes it easy. I have a mamma hen with four chicks in the main coop right now - I usually let them raise their chicks there. Because the nest boxes are not on the ground, once the hen brings the chicks out, she usually can't get the babies to hop back up, so they make new nests in the bedding to be with their chicks. There are several protected areas in my coop for them to do that.

With that said, I agree with what many people suggest, to segregate them if you can, because new mommas may not be able to protect their babies if there are more than a couple chicks for them to raise. I am just not proactive enough to move a setting hen and her eggs ahead of time, nor once she's hatched chicks. I keep an eye on 'em, though.

thanks! and hmm, i hadn't thought yet about the chicks getting in & out of the nesting box -- the one she's in right now is about 6 inches off the "floor" of the henhouse, so i suppose i'll have to set up something else. i've posted the same question on one of the broody threads, and someone has suggested making a cat carrier into a next box, and just placing it inside the run (or henhouse) -- or, i could put a separate nestbox inside an exclosure inside the run.

lots to think about! also thinking about what kind(s) of hatching eggs i might get! i'm torn between curiosity of seeing what the cross-breed "mutts" will look like, vs. getting some additional breeds...

well, it may have been a false alarm re: broodiness, or she's just on the verge of it -- spent at least six hours on the nest, but a little while ago finally got up for a walk. will keep my eye on her, though!
