well, it may have been a false alarm re: broodiness, or she's just on the verge of it -- spent at least six hours on the nest, but a little while ago finally got up for a walk. will keep my eye on her, though!

and in the meantime, more excitement: my first cream legbar egg!

Beautiful! CL are on my "wish list"! I love your egg color assortment.

thank you! i'm lucky to have two of them, & they will be the last of the chicklets to start laying. if/when one goes broody, i may get some more CLs -- and/or marans, as i love the darker eggs -- and/or some swedish flower hen eggs, since that's the breed that my roo is -- and/or perhaps isbars, for green eggs -- or...

yikes, chicken math!

edit: and taxes were done (by preparer) on valentines day, how appropriate -- now waiting for refund deposit to appear... but will pour myself a glass of wine anyway!

The Crele Penes are pipping! I even here them Chirping over the fans on the three incubators. They must be very healthy little guys.

Also, I hope they do not hatch at 2:30 in the morning like the last two hatches......

Set my first batch of eggs in my borrowed bator! Bought 12 mixed breeds, was sent 18! Drove down to Trisha's and picked up 12 Barnevelders, and 6 of her blue-laced project eggs (thank you so much!). Husband caught the hatching bug and had me stop at a place and pick up a dozen Marans eggs. Looked like about half of them were pullet eggs and the color was not great, so we'll see how that goes. Then picked up two more beautiful Marans eggs on the way home. Have you done the math? Yes, that is way more than the 42 spots in the turner. After tucking extra eggs everywhere I could, I still had two of the small Marans that didn't fit. Gave those to my friend to see if he could find a broody to tuck them under. Since the air cells on my shipped eggs are not great, to say the least, I am sure there will be room in the turner in a week or so.

I just finished my Taxes - Yippppeeee!!! I just sat down with a glass of wine which I am going to thoroughly enjoy.
Oh yeah, having taxes done this early really is a great weight off. This year hubby and I used a CPA just because it was our most difficult year for taxes yet. We bought a house, donated a car, bought a car, and have our little side business/hobby. We figured paying someone a little bit of money was worth it so we wouldn't screw ourselves up and we're getting a nice chunk of a refund. That means I get to buy another coop!

Also, I just came back from a friend of mines house today with three "rescue" hens. By rescue I mean they are on the smaller end and others have gotten swooped up by hawks. Also she has so many chickens they may have gone into soup pots even though they're still laying. One is a little white frizzle girl that goes broody, which is great so I won't need an incubator right away, which also means I won't be tempted to fill the egg turner. The other girls are mutts, both have some polish in them and one girl has some araucana as well and she lays blue eggs. It's such an interesting concept that I now have 4 girls that will lay blue eggs. Seriously, I was born from a long line of city people, 3rd generation to be born in Los Angeles, but I'm so much happier not so cramped and can't wait to have some acreage so I can have even more chickens, and some goats.

6 is still more than what I can have! I don't know the actual number of hens allowed in the city but we only have room for a flock of two or three.

I remember a few years ago that the max in SF was 2 maybe 3. It may have changed now and I can't remember all the paticulars, but 2-3 is a good number to start with. Just really hard to stick too if you are of a compulsive nature like so many here seem to be.

Bantams are really cute. I was looking at Old English Game Bantams and they are so tiny. I haven't done a lot of research on those yet, so I am not certain about the egg laying on those. But they are cute!

Our OEGB's have started up again for the season. We probably get 3 eggs a week from each one, but they are also the first to stop laying in the fall.
