Wow! That gorgeous egg makes me so happy I have CL girls. I can't wait!

Oh yeah, having taxes done this early really is a great weight off. This year hubby and I used a CPA just because it was our most difficult year for taxes yet. We bought a house, donated a car, bought a car, and have our little side business/hobby. We figured paying someone a little bit of money was worth it so we wouldn't screw ourselves up and we're getting a nice chunk of a refund. That means I get to buy another coop!

Also, I just came back from a friend of mines house today with three "rescue" hens. By rescue I mean they are on the smaller end and others have gotten swooped up by hawks. Also she has so many chickens they may have gone into soup pots even though they're still laying. One is a little white frizzle girl that goes broody, which is great so I won't need an incubator right away, which also means I won't be tempted to fill the egg turner. The other girls are mutts, both have some polish in them and one girl has some araucana as well and she lays blue eggs. It's such an interesting concept that I now have 4 girls that will lay blue eggs. Seriously, I was born from a long line of city people, 3rd generation to be born in Los Angeles, but I'm so much happier not so cramped and can't wait to have some acreage so I can have even more chickens, and some goats.
I recently moved out to the sticks with my husband and LOVE it! I never liked being cramped in the suburbs! There is so much room for my girls now and someday I plan to expand my animal entourage to include alpacas or llamas...

I'd rather have another beer and plan my chicken varieties to add to my brooder!

Haha. I'm feeling the same way you are. This thread is full of enablers! I've got mealworms in a bookshelf and my red worm composter arrives today.

All to take care of the ever expanding number of city chickens....

Here's my question: with just a small(ish) number of chickens (with names!) what do you do when they stop laying? Keep them on as yard ornaments or into the stock pot they go?
Well I am getting the sprouting thing going and researching fermenting.... lol. I clearly have nothing else to do with my free time! Of which there is actually very little, but enough to get me in to all kinds of things on here.

I didn't have my chickens long enough the first time to have them stop laying. I would have to assume I will keep them until something such as a predator or natural causes. We will see.....

My husband's father was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in January.  Do you know if your friend had adenocarcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma?  He is half way through with 6 weeks of chemo and radiation.

Molly, so glad to hear the positive info from your Dr!  Will keep you in my thoughts a prayers.  My stepmom has been living with her pituitary tumor for the past 15 years with very little growth.  Hope you get good answers from your upcoming tests, too!

I have has mine for about eight years. So far It has been slow grow. I have been having really bad head Aches lately . I'm hoping they are just from the infection that I have had. Currently my Prolactin is higher then ever. It's time for me to slow down and enjoy the simple things...
LIKE.....CHICKENS!

Larry's birthday is monday and I'm thinking of doing a gift certificate (but we'll do it in the summer) of this middle fork american river white water raft trip and then staying at a B&B or nice hotel. http://www.aorafting.com/river/middle-fork-american/one-day-trips.htm

Has anyone done this stretch of the river and does anyone have recommendations for lodging nearby? Or if there is a better rafting company or other activities

I have never done it but, it looks like a lot of fun

Molly I'm sending healing thoughts your way. I'm with you on enjoying chickens. When I was working full time (at a very stressful job and before I got my birds) I would have "chicken therapy" with my friend's flock. There is something so relaxing about the sounds and interactions of a happy flock.

It's my way of meditating.

I am back from visiting the nice folks at Western Pet and Feed in Davis. I picked up 2 bags of Natural Non Soy Starter and 1 bag of Natural non Soy Layer Pellets. They gave me thee two dollar off coupons too..I have a week to go before the Azure drop so I should be ok for feed until then. Next time I will need to get more layer than starter I hope.

Jason: Did you say the Crele Penes take longer to hatch too? I have 5 working on hatching but no pips yet.

I still have 13 Bresse developing. 14 were shipped but one of them was smashed. Do Bresse always develop this well?

Keep us posted on the Bresse's. My Hen laid a few pullet eggs then stopped...

What a tease...
Who did you get your eggs from?

I highly recommend Brinsea's Octagon20 Advance EX model, it's the whole package: turner cradle, incubator and humidity pump.

And somehow this iPad knows I have three of these incubators... Sorry for the multiple posts...
Mine is on order! It'll be here Wednesday! It's on sale right now ($70 off) and if you use the code Brinseafan you'll save an additional 10%, including shipping it was around $450. Thanks for all the help here when I was picking an incubator.
Just want to say all your prayers mean so much to me. I feel your prayer are working..

The breast specialist feels very Confident that it is NOT cancer. She will most Likely be removing a glad and or a duct. Not sure yet.
We are awaiting some results from the other specialist. I'm going to get another MRI or CT scan to see if the tumor on my Pituitary gland has grown.
Time will tell. I left the Doctors feeling " glass half full"
Thank you again for all the wonder thoughts and prayers.

I most be crazy to do this at this time but.....remember, Glass half full!
I'm so glad to hear positive news. I was thinking about you all day.....unfortunately, I got a call from a very good friend yesterday...it was my birthday so I thought she was calling to wish my Happy Birthday....she said she has breast cancer. I'm going with her Monday to find out her options.

I know this sounds really selfish but I lost my 40 year old brother to cancer 4 years ago and I really can't wrap my mind around taking that journey again.....Molly, I'll be sending continued prayer that you continue on a healthy path and that all your chicks hatch!!!!

Quote: I've done both and with my flock, they're fine to leave. Plus, if you move her you have a really high chance of her quitting.
Quote: I wouldn't be able to stay sane without my chickens...ok, I'm not sane but I couldn't make it without my wine and my chickens!
