California - Northern

Here are pics. I just PM'd Ron. I got the Wazine, but haven't treated yet because the dosage is for per 100 chickens & I only have 5. I don't want to give too much, but I am still dealing with the diarrhea. If this is not a worm... what is it? I'm getting ready to go out & disinfect the coop, but what's the safest thing to use? Vinegar? I'm so confused!!! I just want to do the right thing :(

That thing is huge! Do worms get that big? Perhaps its an egg membrane. Have you been getting any jelly eggs?

Ohhhh! I am in love! Such beauties!

Like this?

We have six alpaca and the one llama (and a bunch of sheep). He is the best pasture protector. The neighbors have all lost fully grown sheep, we've never (knock on wood) even lost a lamb.

Jason, when you get your Pene chick, I have a few Araucana chicks you can have. They aren't going to make the cut for show, but if they're girls, they will lay beautiful blue eggs. I have three that are around a week old and another pipped this morning. I was going to CL them as EE, but you can have them if you are interested.

Thanks, Ron & Juststruttin,
The refund is the best thing to do and see if you can get some from Debs_flock.
That's the same thing I was thinking.

Sorry to hear about your loss. What were their symptoms before they passed?

I just hatched a bunch of GC from Debsflock and they are super healthy and robust. Really nice chicks - I am thrilled. Perhaps she has some fluffy butts available. She also have really nice Lakenvelders, I have a couple of her pullets and they are super nice friendly birds. I heard Lakenvelders can be flighty, that has not been my experience with Debs line. One of the Lakenvelders I got from her is a total pest, but in a good way.
They were just listless and not as perked up by water & food like the others were. Also, I noticed they were markedly smaller. One of the Barred Rocks looked to be a 'runt' and may not make it either. I was not a happy camper that they were shipped "Priority" and not "Express" mail, so chicks shipped on the 20th didn't arrive until the 22nd - and reading the shipping tag, apparently some of them had hatched at 10:00 am 10-20-13 before being shipped from DFW airport at 10:30 pm on 10-21-13. I think that all of the larger chicks squashed the smaller ones into a corner of the box when they were in transit. All in all, I'll buy locally from now on!

I sent a PM. Correct, that is not a worm--it is what would become an egg shell. These can happen at POL and starting up after mold and etc. but is a symptom of worms along with eating too much, drinking too much water, watery poos, drop in egg production and sometimes a hunched up and puffed up chicken.

It will be great to hear in several days how much better the flock is doing after treatment.

Such great info!!! Thanks everybody!!! I'm so glad THAT isn't a worm, but I will treat the ladies anyway with the Wazine. Now that you mention it- they have been drinking & eating A LOT! So if I start treatment for the day today, when can we start eating the eggs again? And to disinfect the coop. What do you all normally use? I'm thinking vinegar would be good & non-toxic. Opinions? Thank you!!!!

We actually just got them as pasture ornaments, LOL. We have the four girls. The gray with the blue eyes, Flower, is the mother of the little brown baby, Hershey, born last year. We also have a chocolate brown adult male (he is not the father). The llama, Stockton was a funny story. The local sheep shearer called and said, "I just bought a llama at the Stockton auction. Can I park him in your field for a couple of days until I have a place to put him?" That was about ten years ago, Stocton is a keeper. Every other year, he shears him while he is doing some of our sheep. Most of our sheep are dorpers..............no shearing required!

I haven't done anything yet with the fiber other than give some of it away. We actually do have animals from excellent fiber lines though. They are just fun to have around, like big dogs (that sometimes spit, LOL).

But, for any of you budding alpaca farmers....................we will be parting with a boy this year.

Good(?) morning all

Tragedy struck in my chick nursery last night. All of the chicks are active and eating/drinking except the 5 golden campine girls. 4 of them have died, one is still holding on, but I don't have much hope for her.

I was thinking of Deb too.

Ah, thanks for the votes of confidence. I don't have any of either set right now, but they both lay constantly and hatch very reliably. If you want some let me know and I'll throw some in the incubator. If you are only looking for pullets, I can generally sex them by around ten days of age.

My daughter Clementine tending the big girls as they scratched around the garden on this sunny Sunday. Mark is at the store picking up lumber to start the coop!! So exciting! You all have seriously given me the hatching fever. I am really wanting to get an incubator and set some eggs. I think I'll start with some grocery store eggs to try and get things down pat and then I keep adding to the list of breeds I want from PapaBrooder! Can't wait.

What do you think is the best, most cost effective incubator? I want one that works well, but $400+ is much more than I want to spend. I'm generally pretty adept at learning new things, but I'm wondering what a good compromise between affordability and function is.

Here are some of my pretty birds :) they've began to lay daily and I can't help but hatch or sell every egg so far. Can't bare to eat one lol
