I have two updates. First all 14 duck eggs hatched the were in lockdown. I set 15 but one of them did not developn

The farmer that picked them up today was impressed with how healthy they were compared to store poultry.

Second update: The Rat Zapper I bought last week got a rat tonight! It was a big sucker too. I originally baited it with Black Oil Sun Flower Seeds but that did not work for two nights. This afternoon I used cat food--the kind from Costco that has Fish meal in it. Bingo!

It's a sad night in our chicken yard. Remember my penguin walking blue Langshan chicken Jewel? She's the one in my avatar. I had my DH put her down this evening.

So sorry Debi. I know that you tried your best to save her.

At any rate, had a wonderful time at our home in Cabo, took out our sailing kayak and floated next to whales 50 yards away. It was an amazing experience.

Wow, I would have been scared out of my suit to be that close to a whale in a kayak!

Lookee what I got!
I love the rooster peaking out! Such a precious picture.

Been a tough day...I guess it's been 17 years since I lost my mom on this day. She's been on my mind all day as I visited with my chickens, planted in the garden and even as I'm doing laundry.

She was such an inspiration to me. She taught me how to sew at just 5 years old. Taught me how to cook her delicious recipes and to be creative in the kitchen. We always had crafts of some sort or another set up on the dining room table and always something on the sewing machine table, that never got put away. She was a wonderfully creative and precisioned seamstress. We would change and make patterns together. It was such a special time. No doubt why I became a fashion designer.

I miss her terribly, but I'm so grateful for our life together.
I'm sorry Cheryl. I just recently became a mom and strive to be the kind of mom your mother was.

Beautiful pictures. The SLW is stunning and I have an EE just like yours! They could be twins. I love that chicken, even if she is not the friendliest...

Congrats on the duck hatch! I too have a Rat Zapper but have yet to catch something in it! It's on my counter taunting me to try to catch something, I've been too irritated to try resetting it. The dang thing was so expensive that it makes it even worse that I haven't managed to catch anything in it yet. Sounds like I need to put some stinky cat food in there... I had used dry cat food and peanut butter before so hopefully that was my problem.

I started out this evening looking at chicken poo pictures, I was worried about two of my hens because I noticed what I thought was watery stools but after comparing with pictures they seem to be the cecal poos. Phew! I half wanted DH to glance at my screen though while I was looking at all the pictures to gross him out but he was doing his own thing.

I have a question about transitioning to nipple waterers. I have had both a double wall water container and a nipple waterer since I got my birds (I think I have had them for maybe a month or so) and I want to convert over to the nipple waterer. I have taken each bird and held her beak to the water dispenser until they felt the water come out but I've always seen them using the other traditional water dish. Does anyone have suggestions? Will they just figure it out quickly if I remove the old one? Am I just being paranoid?
