California - Northern

Wow, thanks to the people with warm welcomes. BYC has seemed great, but Northern Californians are clearly the best! You can have a Silver Sebright chick photo as a thank-you!

Sorry if I can't do a lot of helping with other people's problems yet, I had chickens when I was a little kid, but my parents definitely did all the troubleshooting for me back then. Now I've got my own chicks, hopefully I'll become an expert slowly but surely, with enough time reading through sage advice on BYC!

Welcome to the new friends on the thread!
My family is looking at me like I've lost my mind again. I'm peeping at the eggs in lockdown, they should know to expect it by now. Only 3 or 4 more days.

I did convince DH that we should raise Marradunna Basques rather than more sex-links, that's my accomplishment for the year!

Megan sent me a PM today..She has 19 Pita Pinta and 19 Marraduna Basque set in her incubator! If they are fertile, she will start selling hatching eggs.

There's trouble in the hen house!! I integrated my 3 new ladies that I rescued yesterday. They had a decent night roosting, one slept on a nest box, but overall all was well this morning. All but one laid today, which was nice, but these 3 are seriously bullying my 5 sweet, mellow ladies

. They are being very territorial of everything. I had to keep guard so a few could lay in peace, my EE hid under the coop for part of the day, I actually had to lock them out of the laying area so they would leave Flossie alone. I'm trying to condition them by touching them as much as possible, feeding treats, etc, but I went out to close the coop & found that the 3 new girls are roosted & my 5 girls are hiding in the corner!!! I placed them all in position, but one in particular wouldn't stop head-pecking :( I put her in the timeout cage for the night. What else do I do??

When you see one pecking the other, tap the offending hen in the comb or beak. Not too hard--just enough to let her know to knock it off.

If they start hurting the young ones, get some beak peepers--It lets them eat but they cannot pull feathers and etc.

It can take a couple of weeks for them to figure out the pecking order so be patient. Too bad you do not have a nice rooster. He would stop all of the Drama.
