The chicks finshed hatching last night. Out of the ten that made it to lockdown (out of 12 set) I have 10 chicks!! I think I need to find more eggs to hatch.

It looks like I might have two Rhode Island reds, one Ameruacana, and the other 7 EE's (RIR, Ameruacana mixes). Has anyone tried to feather sex chicks? Any advice?

LOL!!!! That's hilarious!! It's the younger girls that are being mean; the new ones. They are being nasty. I can't catch them, but my 3 year old can!! LOL!! I wish I could have a roo!! City rules are dumb! I have a silkie chick that was pathetically trying to crow the other day, but I couldn't figure out who it was.
That's what I did, Ron; pop her head lightly, but she just kept doing it more aggressively, that's when I put her on time out. I checked them now that she's out & they are all fine, roosted where I placed them. I hope I don't have to re-home any of them. I definitely don't like my sweet girls hiding in the corner or under the coop

You must be in GV city limits? You could always have a "stealth rooster" LOL. Ha, I'm surprised they don't offer to take out roosters' voice boxes like they do to some dogs! Saw a dog that had no bark once, poor thing, don't know how the owners could do that to the dog!

Hmmm, don't know about it if will work with chickens, but could you take a squirt bottle to the pecker hen when she's doing it, you know, like you do with a naughty dog?

Hello everyone! Hope everyone had a lovely Easter. I have to start cracking on the chick sales, I've got babies coming out my ears somehow!

Does anyone have any Silkies for sale? Chicks or older. My daughter is lonely now that my mom and step dad have gone home. I'm trying to get Silkie eggs for our next hatch (darn broody silkies!) but I would love to have some (or even one) for her now. We're in Penngrove. Thanks everyone! They can be culls from a breeding program or anything, just looking for a pet, who will be very loved (and probably indoor/outdoor, realistically

My multi-quote isn't working for multiple pages, but thanks to everyone who commented on our pictures! Any yes, Malcolm is such a boy. I really rejected the saying "boys will be boys" when I was pregnant, and I still think it isn't wise to let boys off the hook for being rough or inconsiderate of other people, but there certainly is something to it. He's all about throwing and pushing and running and climbing. Very physical. Clementine was gentle by nature, but trying to teach him to be gentle is a struggle! And he's such a sweetheart, there's no malicious intent. It's a learning experience, I only had a sister.

I have both silkies and extra roos,( black birchen, lavender, and porcelin mayybe splash) if you want em, but I dunno that I'm closer. I do go to Novato on occasion, and will be around Thursday and maybe Friday if you want a roo. Diapers are not hard, but get a couple so you can clean them, you never know how much they poo until you put a diaper on them.

Ron - this is the ONLY one that is a real contender for a pure Marans pullet. So far I think she's actually good for it. What do you think?

That looks a bit off to me, but if its all cottage hill it could be Marans. But the comb and eyes don't look marans 100% to me. Id have to see the whole body structure to know for sure.

They DO do a decrowing procedure, but only one guy does it right ow and its not cheap. roosters still " crow" and the hens can hear them, but its veeery quiet.


Plank seems to be responding to the tylan, but the mass is still there. I could not get fluid out of it might try again tonight. Deanna, when I was reading about internal laying, the only thing I could find was a hysterectomy procedure . You can have an operation to take out the masses, but they are likely to do it again. And the thread said that a lot of girls die when you do that anyway. I don't know of a avian vet that does operations around here, but it also sounds like it might be cost prohibitive. At least that is what I got off the first 20 or so pages of the thread I was reading about it.

Feather sexing doesn't work on all breeds. The chick has to be the result of a fast feathering line, bred with a slow feathering line. Most (not all) breeds can be sexed within a few weeks by comb/wattles & feathering pattern. Silkies are a notorious example of slow to show themselves, but I think they are a feather sexing breed (if I remember correctly). Personally, I just wait until I can tell.

A transformer failed in my neighborhood today. I had to come home an plug in the battery backup--The Brinsea water weasel toy said 90 degrees so the eggs should be ok. The week old reds did not even huddle.

Thank goodness for battery backups!
