California - Northern

Good Evening;

Most of you have probably gone to bed for the night getting ready for work tomorrow. But I wanted to ask a couple of questions on what I was seeing when I candled my eggs tonight.

Of course my problems are mostly from the shipped eggs, and one egg I had to "stack" because my turner is too full.

This one was stacked on top of the other eggs and seems like it laid on its side too long. Is this fixable or is it going to be doomed to failure?

This one has what I would guess others have called a "blood ring", but I have no idea what that means, but I also see some light veining in the yolk above it....... Comments? Throw it away? Is it okay?

I ummmmm was too excited to set my eggs and I didn't candle the shipped eggs before I set them.

I probably should have. What the heck happened to this one? I have about 7 of the shipped eggs that look like this and they all have veins in them.... Do I throw these out? I can't imagine these are going to develop right?

Okay this one is kind of hard to see on here.... (Ha look you can see veining in my fingers!!! ) okay sorry.... Anyway, this egg is in thirds.... the top half has veins and is developing down to a line and then there is a section of what looks like clear yolk and then the clearer part of the egg below that.

These were candled with a new 500 lumen flashlight I found at Costco and they work pretty darn good. They will blind you for sure (I know because I did it not once, but 3 times), however, I haven't retrofitted them with anything for candling yet, so please forgive the fingers. :)

Any and all comments are appreciated. I am most concerned about the horseshoe shaped ones. I am assuming I will have to get rid of those.....

An hour drive later, we were in Medford filling out paperwork at the walk in clinic. At which point I ditched him to go to the feed store.

Come on! Admiring cute chickies, or watching your SO fill out paperwork? You know you'd do the same! Cute chickies and the purchase of ANOTHER 50# bag of crumbles later, I was back in the waiting room. This time by myself, as he was in the midst of getting x-rays. After an unknown amount of time (I had gotten sucked into my newly downloaded ebook), he gimped out with the diagnosis of "sprained knee." Much better than when he injured his other knee, ten years ago.
I love this! And I would have done the same!!!
I processed my first chicken yesterday. I couldn't get up the courage to do the dispatching part (I was too "chicken"

). But I did the rest. It was delicious!!

Looks amazing! I'm dropping hints to DH that we should think about meat birds, but I know I wouldn't be able to do the dirty work. We may try to eat some of the roosters I hatched... How does one mentally prepare to put down birds raised as chicks for eating??? I'm dreading the day we need to make that decision.

Two of the 120ish chicks that hatched in the last couple of days.

I think silver campine chicks are just striking!

I love your pictures! And you fluffy butt shot is hilarious!

Nikon, I love your pictures so much! Is that your yard? It's so beautiful. You must be a wonderful gardener, too! And I'm totally jealous of your offer from Miss Molly.

Here are some of the chicks! I think 17 is going to be our number

. There are nine in the incubator still, but I'm pretty sure they are quitters.

Fuzzant - SO CUTE THE FLUFFY CHEEKS (Fuzzant is what Clementine called Pheasants when she was little. Mark named the chick that for obvious reasons.)
I just died a little with Fuzzant... the cutest chick on the planet!

And great job helping out the babies in need!

My new chickens are so funny. I have tried to give them all sorts of treats....they don't like any of them! I have tried yogurt, BOSS, greens, popped popcorn, banana, fresh pumpkin....they kind of liked boiled egg but not super excited about it. Any other treats that may entice my girls?
Try dried mealworms! My chickens go CRAZY over them. They look disgusting and are pricey but worth it, my chickens can be free-ranging on the biggest worm pile but if I bring out that bag and crinkle it, they come RUNNING.

More coop progress!! The "Coop Stoop" (recycled brick and block patio) was put in this morning then various odds and ends. Got the rafters installed and half the roof base on, got the 'trap door' to chicken jail installed and the ladder installed. Front siding is on and part of the exterior nest boxes are done. Hope to play hooky one day this week to finish the roof and get the rest of the siding up! After that, it's all details.......

So close and yet so far to go..... doh.
Almost there! It looks great, keep the updates coming!

Good luck with her.

I ordered some more cochin bantam frizzle eggs. Today was day 18 " locked down"
Out of 36 shipped ....all 36 are fertile and currently in lock down. That amazes me...;)
A few look a little iffy but 36 out of 36 developed shipped eggs. Amazing :)

It's amazing how long it takes to put something so seemingly easy together....... but it takes FOREVER!!!! Can you imagine doing it without power tools?

Personally, I wouldn't throw any of them out at this point. The one with the potential blood ring (caused when the embryo dies) I would keep an eye on and make sure to toss if it starts leaking. Candle it again in a few days to see if anything has changed. I would rotate the one that was on its side into the turner. Rotate a new one out every day. I noticed that my shipped eggs with saddle air cells tended to resolve themselves somewhat by hatching time. But, some of those also failed to hatch and were dead in the shell when I did the eggtopsy. Draw the air cell on the eggs so you know which end should be up. The air cell should be up. Keep in mind that I've only done one hatch with chicken eggs, so others with more experience will have more insight for you. Good luck!

wow very nice
Man I need someone who has a clue to help me do something for my chickens. I have a friend that asked me if I wanted 9 pallets. Is any kind of pallet good for building? Or are there some I should stay away from?
look for heat treated. If you are just using any of them as a base you should be fine. If you need help with the coop have a coop building party !
big_smile.png

I believe that some pallets are treated (let me know if I am wrong!). I think the treated ones are painted.....the plain wood, is just that....plain wood.

I was wrong, I just found this information! http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-determine-if-a-wood-pallet-is-safe-for-use/
thanks for the link

Quote: They tell you to cull for a any disease--to make the flock stronger--since you do not care about that, you do not have to cull her. There is a good chance she will make it and like all chickens(even vaccinate ones), she has a 3 to 5% chance of getting cancer at 2 years old. Keep her separated and give her good food, water, vitamins and pro biotics. While she is weak you need to make sure she eats and drinks and you may need to get one of those feeding tubes that goes on the end of a syringe.

It sounds like she is progressing through the disease and did not die out right so she may very well recover and if she does she will be fine too. The other chickens at your place either have it or had it and did not show symptoms.

for her recovery!

hugs for you!

Some will and some won't. My mother has OEG hens and her broodies will try and steal babies from the other hens, and abandon their own nests. I have not allowed my broodies to be together with other broodies for exactly that reason. Unless all the eggs are destined to hatch at the same time then sometimes they will share the chicks. Every bird is different - and there is no way of telling exactly what your birds will do. Some make great mommies, and some are awful mommies.

Just tonight I moved one broody hen because her daughter was determined to be broody too - and the daughter's eggs would be a week behind her mothers. I didn't want to allow the daughter to set the eggs and then abandon them a week early when her mom hatched out those chicks. I have seen huge fights with two mother hens over who's chicks they were and sometimes the babies were the ones that suffered the worst... I didn't want that happening.

thanks for this! very helpful. i have set up my little "transit lounge" pen inside the coop's run, so can separate ONE broody/mama from the others, but i don't have space to give all four they're own separate quarters -- and their hatches are going to be about a week apart for the first time, and then another week-10 days-ish for the second two if i get them started on some eggs in the next few days. will just have to hope it all works out!

getting ready for Chick City...
