Miss Molly those babies are really something

Mossy Oak I know exactly what you mean about saving a spot in your flock for special birds. One of the hardest things for all of us is limiting ourselves to what we can have in our situation so some of us don't
wink.png
I have to; but have wanted Chanteclers since I first started researching what breeds to get. Now I have two in the bator but I don't know if they are doing anything. And their spots in my flock might be usurped by someone else ( because I am a tad fickle) and it makes me a little sad.

However, I am thinking I may know someone who will hatch a few for me next spring if these don't work out which is a VERY nice thing about this thread. Whatever your heart desires these good people will feed your addiction!

Welcome to all new people.

Day 13!!!!!! Showed my mom the egg action last night. Next time she comes by they will be chicks and she hadn't seen developing embryos since she was a kid. Tomorrow I am candling everything again and I am hoping
fl.gif
that at least one of the two remaining partridge chantecler eggs may be viable. On Day 10 I didn't see movement in those but they aren't clear either.

I recently read something that said to stop turning shipped eggs at day 14. Any thoughts on that?

We got SOO lucky with our head hens. Nixy used to be the top girl until we got roosters, and used buffy as an enforcer ( austorlorp and buff orphington) Buffy liked everyone to sit in a specific place and would march up and down and bark when they were not in the proper roosting spot.

When the Marans girls came up, they took over, but they like the roosters to run things. So Catalina only steps in if there is an issue with something. But we have a lot of space and 4 feeders scattered around.

My problem ends up being the second in command roosters. The smaller roos seem to like a friend as the second in command. The Marans... do not. Orlando the cream legbar that sounds like a cockatoo is the head boy, and does not let the black girls around treats for his hens. Louie 2 is the top marans roo and does not let the other Marans hens near dauphin, the second marans roo. Dauphin spends his days outside the Bresse pen annoying clovis and wooing the bresse girls, who like to flirt. I have never seen him try and mount anyone however, I think he is too convinced he is low in the pecking order.

Oralndos friend, however , is a red partridge showgirl who he lets romance some of the lesser girls. Since none of them are silkies, this is not great! They are going to live with the grow outs soon so I am less worried about weird chicks.

Besides a few roo scuffles, and picking on Plank if she goes out ( my sick girl who we think has cancer) I don't have any aggression issues with my girls or head hens.

Chiquita....sounds like a Soap Opera....you could call it, "Peckin Place" I am dating myself with that one for sure;

You all might think this is loopy but we have so few incidents of pecking in our flock that I don't know who is on top. I think it might be one of my Australorps. Buckbeak who is Ray's favorite girl and pecks whomever may be blocking her spot at the trough. I do know that Della is on the bottom but that doesn't stop her from being bold and fun and scrappy. I think she annoys the others sometimes for the same reasons she charms the humans.

I also like your names. I am thrilled that some of you have names lacking in imagination for some of your hens too. I was embarrassed to tell you that I have a "Della" Bet you can guess what breed she is without even looking at my avatar.

Hi all - newbie who finally found my way to this thread! Looking for people in the Elk grove/Sacramento area. We are "city-folk" in suburbia working on a new backyard flock.
Welcome to the thread..............I'm in the Placerville area

Pam, I lost my multi quote........................the deer here are so aggressive, they have started coming up onto our elevated deck and eating fuchias from the hanging baskets. I think they'd LOVE some of your lettuce, I know I would but I'd have to use wire cages on the barrel.

This is my top chicken. Ugly the Barred Rock - We named her ugly because the poor thing has been molting for almost a year, she has finally gotten in most of her feathers. She is about 8 months older than the rest of the hens, and she doesn't really have any friends. She can be really nasty to the rest of them, especially if they are getting attention and she isn't. If I pet, or hold one of the others she runs and attacks them as soon as I put them back down.

She has the stink eye down pat! She is cute, and some people think chickens don't have personalities.

Hatching eggs will be ok if not turned the first week or the last. Shipping does not change that as far as I know. Leaving shipped eggs upright for incubation and tilted at hatch is the best way. It is also the best way for not shipped eggs and is the way hatcheries hatch eggs too!

I leave them in the turner until day 19. Not turning them for the first couple of days does helped with eggs that have been treated poorly or packed poorly. It is amazing how much better hatching eggs do if they are correctly packed.....

I have two Partridge Chanteclers from John Blehm. They are 7 weeks old and I am sure one is a hen. I only ordered two as I hoped I would get lucky and get a pair and when ChickNmama talked to John (we split an order) he told her the two partridges were the only ones to hatch in that bunch, so I guess I did get lucky. So if you get nothing I could help you in the future if you still want them. They are very sweet natured also. The Ameraucanas from that order are wild children, not mean just run around crazy.

That one I could share.... they may not know a Frizzle, but they know the Snoop Dog, and that was pretty funny.

I am in Southern California but I have a lot of family in the North. To me northern Cali is above San Fran.
I have family all over ....Hydesville, Eureka, Arcata, McKinleyville then on over to Redding.
I am really a Northern Cali girl at heart

HI! I see you are in the sacra-tomato area. Have you not yet noticed it is pronounced "Sacramenno"?

I say Sacra-tomato all the time!

You are two days ahead of me on hatching. What else are you trying to hatch aside from the Chantecler? I couldn't keep my hands off the eggs last night so I pulled a couple of the ones I had marked as "clear" on the day 7 candle I did and they are still clear. I was able to see through a couple of the Welsummer this time and did see the air cell and that they are developing. Last time they just seemed too dark to see through. The white Polish eggs are SUPER easy to see through.

Very Cute Pic...She's all ""Whudda you lookin at??"

WhoooooooooooooooooooooHooooooooooooooo. I think the timing could be right too. We will see. When I went to the ALBC page for the first time I got my heart set on Chanteclers and Dorkings. I have 5 Dorking embryos kicking around in their eggs so hoping I get a hen or two but am also planning to get a couple of culls from Kim later this year. If I have both by this time next year I will be really happy! Do you have other colors? I would like a buff at some time too but am partial to Partridge at the moment.
