I have to wait and see what hatches I want to do one more hatch around the end of May maybe. I want some of Deb's HRIR and some others.

I have:
15 Wheaten Ameracauna from here https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/739826/12-wheaten-blue-wheaten-ameraucana-eggs-buy-it-now
The shells are so thick on these they are hard to see through so we will see what hatches.
2 maybe 3 English Orps, either Blue or Lavendar
1 Basque - the other isn't developing
3 Welsummer
5 Polish - Mystery colors. I am not sure what she gave me
3 Olive Eggers
2-3 Cream Legbar - one of them wasn't developing either I think

and...... I think something else, but I can't really remember! How sad is that? There must be something else because that doesn't add up to a full incubator and mine is over full.

I know what you mean about things depending on the hatch but................................If you get an olive egger roo or a Welsummer roo that you can't keep I may possibly be interested in such a fellow...I want olive green eggs!

Lawatt What is your hatch date? are any of your broodies sitting on SPRs? Are they feather sexable??? No Reason....just curious

hatch dates vary by broody -- the first is "due" this sunday or so, the next is a week from the following monday, the third just started her eggs this tuesday afternoon so she's got 20 days to go, and the last will be getting her eggs today when they arrive in the mail (thanks Molly!), so 21 days from tomorrow. or so.

no SPPRs, although one of my broodies is an SPPR -- i've got a few marans eggs (2 FBCM, one birchen), four SFHs, a whole bunch of auracanas, an assortment of CLs, icelandics, and bresse, and arriving in the mail today are isbar eggs, plus a few project-bird eggs from various sources.

and this is my first-ever hatching! so excited to see how everyone turns out! although still need to work out a plan for the baby chicks once they hatch, as the hatching box that three broodies are in is elevated off the henhouse floor by about 8 inches... need to make a little ramp.

If it is the air cell I have heard of horse-shoe air cell chicks hatching out ok if they were allowed enough time to re-attach and were set slanted with the air cell upright at hatch.

I haven't heard of horseshoe yolks before or what happens with them. I guess all you can do is wait and

I think I would probably turn off or take it out of the turner early for that one - just because that chick moving around more than necessary might hurt its chances of hatching if that membrane is broken or weakened. I would keep a close eye on those though - and keep checking them...

P.S. - I have always found my blue eggs harder to see into than the brown or white eggs. I haven't tried Marans eggs yet though...

Oh, thank you for that link on the Wheatens. I got to drool over some pretty pictures and laugh at the warning at the end... I am now going to RESIST buying any .. MUST RESIST!!!

I want to make sure I understand - you are not incubating them on their side but tilted upright? Do you do this by using an egg carton or some other means? How does this contribute to a better hatch?

yes, after they are done turning, put them in an egg carton in the hatcher/incubator. keeps the other chicks from egg madness, and makes it easier for the chicks to get out. Just keep an eye for guys who pip on the wrong side.

Yeah, but I see veins, so am I going to get a Frankenstein chicken? Here is the picture at day 7 of one of them. That dark area doesn't appear to be the air cell, because I see veins in it.

Olive egger roos genetics get complicated. You need to breed them back to a BLUE egg gene to get olive eggs( or a lot of olive layers) , and then they will be lighter then the egg he would have layed.

He will have
1 blue gene ( dominant)
1 white gene
1 brown spigot gene

So if your hen has 2 white genes ( dark egg layer) you will only get olive eggs when he passes his blue gene on. If you breed him to a girl with 2 blue genes, the eggs will be lighter ( his spigot gets diluted by there no spigot) but they have a chance of having double blue genes. To get olive eggers that consistantly lay olive eggs, you need birds that have 2 blue genes and a brown spigot gene. And since you cant TELL if they carry a white gene, its tough.

so, story is, its easier to get olive eggs from a wellie.

That being said, I have a f2 olive egger rooster I just got back ( muffs and pea comb, so he likely has the blue gene) that should ahve dark spigot and a green egg gene. If you breed him back to blue eggs he should still have a nice olive gene. he is 3/4 Marans with blue gene. If you do want one, hes around. I call him muffler 2.

I have seen eggs like that develope and hatch. IS it on target growth wise? Otherwise it might be an early quitter, they can look like that too. NO giving up on franken chickjust yet!

You have a great assortment to look forward to!

I hope to use broodies or expert Northern Claifornia hatchers to hatch any future hatches. This is my first too and I am totally excited but would prefer to have a hen or two do it all next time.
