Hi! I am a backyard chickenkeeper who's hens go broody from time to time. Now I find that I have to thin my flock yet again. It makes me sad that I can never find homes for roos. Do you all who can't keep roos eat 'em? What do yo do?
I am going to share a photo, just because I love it. I had it made into an 8x10 at walgreens just today. I hope someone enjoys it. These are lavender ameraucanas, or so I was told. (the babies, not the moms)

Poor roos. I wish there was a way to tell them to whisper in the mornings and evenings.

Thos chicks are cute!

Jason,

Hopefully 6 of the Emp eggs are just true to form and dawdlers, but you currently have 6 OE and 3 Emp walking around the incubator.

leave them for a bit on WIRE if you can to see if the toes uncurl. If they do not uncurl after 3-4 days, you'll have to make booties and or hobbles and or cups. If I'm worried they are too weak, ill leave them in the bator, but give them sugar and vitamin water and sometimes put food in it ( expect to clean that however, that can get... interesting)

they flip over when they have yolk bellies and they are weak, sometimes its just that. If they are still having trouble after 36 hours of sleeping you need to watch it. Before that they can just need a LOT of sleep and time.

I think you are getting 2 swaps mixed up. the may Egg swap is just that. You swap eggs with someone else, and what you get is a surprise. The moderator sets it up and sends you an address.
The hatching egg/paypal swap is what I think is confusing you.
That is a "pay it forward swap" where person a offers something, and person b claims it and offers something, then person c claims it...

It is different then the other egg swaps in that instead of EGGS, you can offer CASH. ( min 17 bucks)
So.. I offer 6+ silkie eggs. you have SOOO wanted silkie eggs so you jump in!!
You can offer 6 pure bread eggs of one breed you have ( or 6 egg from any of breeds you have, you want this offer to get accepted by person c) or you can offer 17 ( or more) paypal, if you don't have eggs, or dot want to be bothered sending eggs.

If you offer is accepted in 6 or so hours by person c, you get my silkie eggs. if its not, you can sweeten your offer, or it goes back to my offer of eggs.

Its not that complicated, but its confusing the first few times. There are a few basic thing you have to do with your offer, that seem a bit convoluted, that are designed to keep the thread moving and protect you and the other swappers from getting burned.

If you miss one of the rules, someone will point it out and you can adjust. Don't get worried if you get something pointed out, its a bit convoluted at first, and everyone understands its crazy.

Thank you chiquita! I have been giving it water with nutri drench. And letting it sleep. It stayed in the bator for 24+ hours after it hatched but I guess I should have left it in for longr. I wanted it to hear the cheeps of the other chicks so moved it into the brooder in a little box so that they can't bother it. I have already unplugged the bator but next time I will know better. Is there a link to making booties somewhere?

eta Do you dissolve the crumbles in a bit of the sugar water? How about an egg yolk?

Thank you for explaining the swaps I did have them confused. I think it would be fun to do the simple one. The complex one has my head spinning still

I want your eggs so I offer my eggs to a third person who, if they accept, assure that I get your eggs?? I will leave that to the eggsperts.

Sweet Picture! Lucky you to have all those broodies. I am hoping some of my newest crop of chicks go broody next spring. Re Roosters, A lot of people process them. This has been my first experience hatching though and those are just days old. I am still allowing myself to believe that all of my newest are little girls.

Jason,

I just hatched 9 of your Crele Pene eggs. I am soooo excited!!!! I will get pictures once they dry out and I know the boy/girl ratio. Yipppeeee. Thanks for the awesome eggs!!!

just think of it as forward swap. it works well there are a lot of people, and a LOT of eggs.

In a box withe the other chicks is great too. she is probably happy there. whatever she will eat is good. The simple swap is the link i posted, you have to sign up for that one, but that easy just a google form.

We eat our extra roos. I make sure they have an extra happy life and spoil them extra well. The ones that i get attached to, or are very sweet, i do work to find homes for. I can usualy rehome 2 roos a month.

Hi and welcome. They are cute lavender colored chicks. What color are their legs and where did you get them?

How sweet!!! I love to see a mama and her babies! I sometimes find new homes for the roos but most of the time, they go to my friend's 10 acre farm and are processed after they are full grown. They live a totally pampered life here at my house and then they get to free range for a few months before taking the quick plunge down the cone. So, they have a happy chicken life and their death serves a function. There is no comparison in taste between a store bought chicken and a home raised free range chicken!
