I lost 2 of my first showgirls to drowning. Silkies REALLY can't swim. You will want to keep any future chicks from the pool. They are wobbly and fall. But that is in the far future. It will be interesting to see if they like to wet their feet. I put a kiddie pool out for the turkeys
I have 2 large, flat bird baths on the ground for waterers. My girls like them better than the traditional waterers. I do have to clean them out every day because they love to stand in them especially when it is hot.

Hmmmm, my post seems to be invisible. We processed our first quail today.............................way easier than chickens. I hope I like them, they are destined for Cinco de Mayo dinner.
I see it! I used to help my father process quail when I was young. He used to make a slit and seemed to pull off all the skin/feathers in one swoop. Looks like yummy dinner for you tonight! EDITED BECAUSE MY PHONE IS WACKY WITH THE TYPE TODAY!

Love them! Wow! I could see one boy with huge legs! He's going to be a bruiser!

You have picked out the most likely breeding Rooster! He has been big and nicely built since hatch. The legs are wide apart and he has a great brick shape. He may be that one in a hundred Rosters! So far the comb looks good too.

Yesterday I opened the garage Door and he was out being flock master with one other rooster and 4 of the pullets!

I had to cover the top of the brooder--it was cute but very messy.....

I would not worry about it being too tough. The wild ones I hunted were very old and they were always tender and tasty.

I do not like Dove though....

Yum!! I've never seen "naked" quail before!! I didn't expect them to be so pink. What are you going to make with them?

Our little serama nutmeg is obsessed with getting inside. She is too small to open the dog door ( praise the chicken gods) so she waits for me to go in or out andflies in screaming like a tiny kamikaze pilot.

We may have to get her a diaper..

That is exactly how Miss Zsa Zsa is! We have had many sleep overs. Luckily she just perches up on top of the bookshelf and doesn't make much of a mess because she is sleeping.

They look good! Please report back on how they taste! What kind of quail are these? I have these 19 Bobwhites that I don't know what to do with. They are too big for the brooder and need their own pen outside. Quail are stinkier than chickens, IMO. These guys may be slated for the dinner table instead of keeping them for eggs.

Ya, it was always very tender and never had the skin. Usually it was Bobwhite quail. I guess there is a lot of them in the wild in Oklahoma because we used to come home with piles of them.

I'm with you on the doves.

Here are a few of my chick pics. these are and "Ameraucana" from Privett and my little dorking polish X check out her toes in the close up but these chicks are only 3 days apart the dorkingx is the same size as all my other hatchlings.

With the Behemoth

The EE is just about as pretty a chick as I have seen. Looks like a bon bon! does the leg color indicate anything about egg color??

It doesn't have a fifth distinct toe on either foot but instead the back toe on both is divided in two, clearly on the right not so much on the left

No crest. Mom is a buff laced polish don't they hatch with crests??

Coturnix you process at about eight weeks, these birds are probably a year old. I'm going to brown them and put them in a casserole dish. Then sauté some onions and mushrooms, simmer in a little broth and wine, pour over the birds cover tightly and braise at low heat for a couple of hours. I usually braise all my older cockerels, that way they aren't stringy.

There are two coturnix and two bobwhite here. Were you the one that was looking for a processing video? It only took 15 min to do all four birds. If these are tasty, all my extras are going into the freezer this week!
