California - Northern

Hey guys, so today I need to go to Bradshaw Feed and Pet Supply to pick up some feed for my turkeys poults, they're 4 weeks old, and I was wondering what type of feed should I get them because and what brand is best. I'm fairly new to raising birds poultry. I was also wanting to raise a pet chicken nad i want to know what chicken breeds are the best pets. I want to get a bird that will love me and want to cuddle and will know its my baby.

Your poults should be on a 28% protein starter for another 2 months but then can be switched to a flock raiser/grower with a lower protein content. Don't go under 20% protein though or you won't get the growth you want. I don't know what they carry at that feed store but if they have a website and can look up what they carry I am sure you can find someone who can answer your questions about brands. I wasn't that enlightened when i had turkeys so fed Purina b/c it is what our feedstore had but I don't think that is the best choice anymore

ETA: Are you talking about having a house chicken? You will need to get at least two because they require a bird friend to be happy. I have no experience with them but Silkies seem to be the most likely to meet your description...Just remember "love" is human ( and I think canine and equine and probably other mammal) emotion. It may occur in g birds too but I haven't personally witnessed it. Mostly my friendliest birds that want contact with me are also curious and wanting snacks or scratches more than ME. Others probably have had different experiences and will no doubt share them.

My Oldest Daughter has a friend that has an egg business. He has three mobile coops, the big kind that sits on a truck axle. The 400 chickens in the three coops are moved to different farms and fields in the Winters area. The one I visited is on a an organic Farm while another one is in a Fig Orchard. He sells the eggs in SF Bay Area stores and cannot keep up with the orders for eggs.

I am helping him get some Heritage and cool egg laying breeds and in exchange I get things like Lamb Shoulders and etc. along with a place for the Roosters to live. He was very impressed with Chema, The EO Basqeue Rooster that I hatched last year. His current roosters are little bitty hatchery birds. Wait until he sees one of those HRIR Roosters in two years.... I also get to breed a bunch of Basque, HRIR, Blue Egg Layers and at least one of the Penedesencas this year. Next year I will be able to breed from the best of this years hatchlings.

The first batch of Basque hatch this weekend.

What a great deal for both of you! I am curious about the Blue Egg Layers. Can you tell me about them. My perfect egg basket will have a bright blue egg in it.

They are the Blue Egg Layers from the University of Arkansas. They are a project for the Poultry Program there. It turns out that they are from Whiting Farms in Colorado. They are a cross between Araucanas and Leghorns. They are Blue and Splash in color.

I took this picture on Sunday:

They lay a very blue egg and are reported to lay a bit more than Cream Legbars--Starting as early as 16 weeks old.

I've been luck so far on my ratios, just small batches. 3 with 1 roo, 7 with 3 roos but 1 little girl didn't make it, my third hatch was 12 with 8 girls. I guess I have to wait on sexing the basque, but someone looked at the picture and said they saw 3 maybe 4 girls in the 7.

I think I'm going to play mean landlord Sunday. It's looking like I've got 4 banties and 3 maybe 4 big girls glued in the boxes.

I put 9 of these in the incubator this morning! I have a zillion blue chickens hatching this month. Iowa blues BBS cochins BBS orphs these guys and.... Something else.

My rirs are due to hatch this week. I have never seen a rose comb one I hope some hatch.

Sorry broodies are in rent control can't kick in.

I'm more than OK with the broodies. They can raise babies better than me I just need to get them secured so the others can't hurt them and the others can get to the nest boxes.
