California - Northern

Hey guys. I'm sorry to pop in looking for help but my husband has been out of town for work and it's been me with all the kids, animals, sick dog etc. LOL

Yesterday I noted one of my Leghorns is limping around a LOT. Today it's even more marked and her tail is down. She stays with the flock but it's a struggle. I have NO idea what is wrong with her. NONE of the other chickens are low, limping or ANYthing. She still laid an egg today and her egg is lovely and perfect. I checked her feet for bumble and see nice clean healthy looking feet.

Anyone have ANY other ideas? My dog does not run free and I do not believe any stray dogs can get into my yard...I am at a serious loss right now and I feel really bad for her.
It is possible she caught her leg on something or injured it jumping down from the roost. I had a rooster that injured his leg and couldn't use it at all. I was in the chicken yard when it happened. He jumped at the fence sparing with another rooster and caught his leg for just a second. There was no visual sign of an injury, just that he couldn't put weight on that leg. I let him limp around the yard during the day and at night night he got on the roost by himself but waited in the morning for me to help him down. It took 3 weeks for him to put his full weight on his leg and he made a complete recovery. I think if you limit the hens movement during the day and lock her in a kennel at night so she doesn't make it worse by jumping down off of the roost, her leg will improve.

Hope this helps

Just got back from spending the morning at the Orangevale Small Animal Exchange. It was a pleasant day (not too hot) and lots of chicken talk. I sold a fair number of birds and have several people coming up to the house in the next week to buy birds that I didn't have with me.

I also have a family coming up tomorrow to pick two show birds for their 4H children. I love to help get kids started and will send them home with some kick @ss show birds!

I love to see the kids with their birds. I'm going to be running the youth poultry show at the CA State Fair this year.

Good luck 18peeps!

Nice looking coop!
Thank you Happy Chooks!

I put 27 into "lockdown" late (although I've had to open the incubator quite a bit just to remove chicks so they don't play soccer with the remaining eggs...I know, not supposed to do that, but it seemed like either that or they would trash the remaining eggs). So far, 15 have hatched, 6 more have pipped, 1 pipped with assistance because it had an air cell on the side and it decided to try pip on the other side of the egg with no air. I only caught him/her doing it by chance and happened to get a clearing so he/she can breath and wait (don't know if he/she will make it), 5 more seem have internal pips because I hear peeping, but there is no crack in the shell yet so hopefully they will pip externally soon.

It seems like quite a staggered hatch, but they come out looking very healthy and for that I am so thankful! What an exciting day for us. The kids are going crazy with happiness picking out their favorites.

I am very sorry to hear that!

Laying an egg suggests it is not an illness, so it is probably an injury. Check her over carefully for cuts and etc. I hope she did not break a bone.

If her feet are OK she could have pulled a muscle. Speedy did that and limped for a month. He was fine however. I'd feel her in the coop tonight and make sure there are no lumps or broken bones.
Thanks! We cornered her in the coop and brought her inside. She is mentally sharp. She has NO visible signs of injury. I checked for lumps, bumps, wounds- all over. Nada. Legs are good, don't appear to be any breaks. She is definitely in pain. We'll lock her up in the kennel that is inside the coop with her sister at night for a few weeks maybe? It's SO hot outside. Like 90s hot. I have 2 broodies panting like mad in their lay boxes. They are crazy.

Another question- it's getting hot out. Just going to get hotter (we get 100+ usually in summer here). These broodies still have like 2 more weeks to go. They are both super feathery breeds. Are they going to die of heat stroke? I'm concerned about them.

You can get a spray on pain medication for chickens. I bought one, but have not used it, so not sure how great it is, but it is at tractor supply.

No clue on the broodies. Dollys eggs were on day 18 today, so she decided to abandon them. BAD CHICKEN NO COOKIES FOR YOU!

There were some young quail, ducklings, older birds, rabbits, a cavy and a chinchilla. That was pretty much it, oh, a few supplies and used cages. I talked about your birds though, someone was looking for a dark egg layer, I told them about Marans, welsummer and all your birds.

These pens are each 4 x 12 with a 4 x 4 coop.
