California - Northern

I went to the bator yesterday morning to toss eggs that failed to hatch Monday and found a little Cream Legbar rooster looking up at me. I had to do a double take cuz I really did not expect him to be in there. He seems perfectly healthy with no leg issues. Tough little bugger.
Wow! He's a fighter for sure!

I had a similar disappointing hatch and my eggs weren't even shipped and it wasn't my incubator because I just had a 100% hatch from my own Ameraucana eggs

Out of 18 eggs, 3 were clears, 2 quitters, 1 pipped and died (it was deformed with only one hole for nostrils) one hatched on its own with a partially unabsorbed yoke (may not make it) 5 didn't hatch, so I ended up with 6 healthy chicks. I am just glad I got some of this line to work with now

Beautiful babies! Are they also Ameraucanas?

Sorry to hear not as many hatched as you had hoped, but congrats on the ones that did and are healthy!

Hope the one that couldn't stand makes it!

Oh my such pretty chicks!

The USPS is proposing to increase rates on shipped poultry. Here is a link to the proposal

https://www.federalregister.gov/art...andards-for-live-animals-and-special-handling

"They are asking that a Special Handle Fee be charged on every Live Animal Shipment. This proposal would increase the postage amount by $9.00 to $11.95 per box.
The proposal outlines the new fees to be charged but it does not include any new rules to insure us that service would also improve. Nor does it offer how additional funds would address their concerns about; Protection of Postal Service employees, mail and the environment, or animals against death.
Please read the proposed changes and send your comments to the US Post Office. We have included a link to a sample letter (in MS Word) for your use. (Sample Letter Link)

Make your voice heard, do it today. The comment period ends next week May 24." (this was copied from an email sent to me from Mcmurray)

So many wonderful picture on this thread! It moves so quickly I have a hard time keeping up with it, but I'm trying.

Here are pictures of the Barnevelders from Wednesday, so that would make the 3-4 days old. They are the cutest chicks and we are really enjoying them:

My first batch was started with Braggs apple cider vinegar but I didn't like how it was growing so I made my own LAB (lacto bacillus) culture using the steps on this video:

I'm very happy with the way my culture is growing using LAB and there are other uses for the extra LAB cultures.
You know I watched that video a while ago and couldn't find it again. I think I am going to try this too. Did it work faster than the ACV?

Candy glad you got some to start with.

Sadly the poor chick did not make it. After giving it the poly vi sol it seemed more perky but sadly was laying in the corner when I got up
Well you did your best. Running out late in the evening to find baby vitamins. At least the checker didn't ask what it was for. If you said your new chick he may have looked at you a little odd.....

So how old did he look? A day, two days, three days old? Was the bator still on?

Am I crazy?! 2 full incubators lol

RE: 39 CFR Part 111 New Mailing Standards for Live Animals and Special Handling
You know if they were proposing better handling at LEAST then it might not be so bad, but I see more and more stories about terrible shipment issues.

So here are my unprofessional pictures with too much poo in them, but this is what I could get. They all act like I am going to kill them. I haven't had the time to spend with them like I would like. Sorry they are a bit blurry in some cases. iPhones are not the best for pictures.

I believe this guy is a Wooster as my niece used to say. He seems to be the healthiest of the 3 Polish that hatched from Deann's Crele Polish project.

I can't remember for sure but I think this one is a Welsummer.

Here is the second Polish, Crele Project too, I think, not certain for sure.

Same Polish.... :) You think the blue one on the right is a boy? I think that is an Orp or DLBB. I just don't know the difference yet in the babies.

This is the almost 3 week old pink comb club. I didn't notice the pink until I looked at the picture on my phone. You think these are boys?

This is my Velociraptor Orpington or maybe DLBB, I think.

Out of 30 quick pictures taken these were all that were usable. Maybe I will have more time this weekend. Any thoughts on breeds or gender of any of them? I am only guessing on almost everything I said here.
