Jason, I am unable to enlarge your pictures (my computer is acting up) to get a good look at your chicks, but I would say the two that are buff with patches of darker buff (like in your first picture) are roosters. I am still having a hard time sexing some of the ones I have here

Here is a photo I took tonight that is a good example of what a pullet and rooster EE chick looks like.

I would have answered that wrong! I thought BBS was one gene set that was a spectrum. 10 was black and 1 was light light splash.

the first one that went missing, along with its two injured siblings, I'm pretty sure were all attacked by Eleanor (or perhaps even one of the other big girls?) -- they were small enough to wiggle through the wire mesh of Speedy's enclosure, and then were found out in the run with no mama to protect them, & everyone's been pretty ruthless with lone chicks.

for the bresse and icelandic/showgirl, they just always seemed weak, right from the hatch -- the cross spent all its time cheeping loudly if it wasn't directly underneath its mama, and the bresse's favorite thing to do was bask in the sun and close it's eyes... if i'd been raising them at a constant temperature & controlled conditions in a brooder, they might have been fine, but their mama has been pretty actively taking them all around & showing them how to forage, and I think they just weren't cut out for it.

but the remaining chicks are all doing great -- i took some more photos today, trying to document their growth:

pecking around in the sunshine -- the one in the back has slightly smaller/slower-growing wing feathers, and is a bit smaller/quieter than the other two, but they're all quite active

I swear I'm going to hang a calander in the coops. Yesterday I said I was expecting a bantam hatch on Tuesday. Look what was in the coop when I got home today.


There are 5 more under her I hope to see soon. The chick is a dutch/OEGB mix.

now it just needs the coop but run #3 is all done except the netting which will happen next weekend

Figured out the problem with the pictures and it is an iPHONE problem. Yup that's right! I said iPHONE has a problem. I recently switched to iPhone about 6+ months ago and I am not that impressed.

Anyway, back to chicken stuff.

Here are the first pics I took this weekend. This is already several weekends in to it. It probably took me about 3 days for the framing.

This weekend I added the bottom

and the sides.



Now I am going to work on the poop board and the roost. Then I need to get the roof on and the doors and the hardware cloth around the bottom and then I could probably move them in. That means I have a lot to do this next weekend. I could probably move them in without the roof because it is closed with hardware cloth, but that seems odd to me to leave them out there like that without the roof on. I will be adding on to the run after they have been moved outside.

After I get them out there I will work on some other ventilation and I am trying to figure out how to make the nesting boxes that stick out the side of the coop. Anyone have instructions on that? I can't figure out how they are attached.....?

Wow! Looks awesome.. but if I had 4k I'd go on a shopping spree and then build one! hehe I wish I had the space for it too!

We have a pen of grow out roosters at the farm just waiting for processing day. My friend has the whole set up including a plucker. The last processing day we processed 42 chickens and 1 old tom turkey. She is planning another processing day in the next month or so and then another big one later in the summer. Is anyone interested in a processing workshop? She has done a co-op before where you pay a certain amount and help with the processing then you go home with several chickens bagged and ready to be chilled then frozen. She might also be willing to have you come help with the processing and bring your own chickens to process. The farm is just outside of Brentwood. I'm just tossing the idea out there to see if there is any interest.

That's awesome! We are going to have about 8 extra roosters out of this batch. We're going to try to sell them in a few weeks and the ones we don't we will be eating! I would LOVE coming out at the end of the summer to process what I have left (and learn too!) Please let me know!

I have 2 that are due to hatch this next weekend and I just put 12 more in the incubator on Sat. It is going to be a staggered hatch but none of the shipped Langshan eggs that were also due to hatch this weekend developed. They were shipped from AZ in the middle of that heat wave so I'm thinking that really messed them up.

I was so disappointed to not get any of them to develop that I went ahead and loaded up the incubator with Langshan and Bresse eggs from my birds.

Oh no Debi, I'm sorry to hear about the shipped eggs :-( When times get tough, load the incubator!?! hahaha Good for you!!

One Hen had no developed eggs. One hen had all that develped hatch while another had one hatch out of 4 set to hatch.

The incubator was set up like this for hatch:



Two Delawares hatched--One is fluffing up in the incubator. Going by color, there should be a bunch of pullets in here:

Ron they are adorable! I'm already missing how little they can be! Question - Why do you hatch in those little tomato plastic container things? Is this a special trick I should know about?

Ok last thing! We will have at least 5 Pita Pinta cockerels and 2-3 Basque cockerels for sale soon. They are 4 weeks now. Let me know if any of you are interested!
