Ron they are adorable! I'm already missing how little they can be! Question - Why do you hatch in those little tomato plastic container things? Is this a special trick I should know about?

I am hatching by Hen--Each basket had eggs form one hen and then the chicks each get a different color band based on the Hen that was the mother.

I am hatching like this for Capayvalleychick. Kim is learning a lot already.

So, I though this little one was a Silkie, but now I'm questioning it. What else could it be?



It looks like it has a straight comb



The feathers don't look like a Silkie, to me



and it only has 4 toes, don't Silkies have 5?



I have no idea what this one is, does anyone else have a guess?

Yup! we eat ours too! Marans are the table bird of France...and now I know why.

Out of everything I've processed so far, marans were the tastiest.

We did a ton last year and ill tell ya, I plucked 6 by hand and skinned the rest lol!

It dawned on me as the hubs and I drove to Auburn to meet up with Debs_flock to pick up our newest addition to our flock (Hershey, the Black Copper Maran) and I'm walking through a street fair (oops, didn't know there was one) holding a CHICKEN! Women and children are pointing and snickering. One lady stopped me and exclaimed, "Is THAT a bird!?". Silently praying as I pass by a giant Saint Bernhard dog that he doesn't what I'm holding, I finally made it back to the car! Never in a million years thought I'd ever check that off the bucket list!

You're welcome, I hope she does well for you. I held her close to my body while I was walking through, I don't think anyone noticed her, LOL

I'm looking for a few rare breeds, does anyone know of anyone on here that sell them privately? Hatching eggs preferred.

Top one - Cochin? Yes, Silkies have 5 toes, and black skin and eyes.

Bottom one.. um.. no clue..

Ahhhh.... Now I'm totally lost. I thought this one was a Cochin.

They could both be, but the black one is half the size of the other one. What other bantams have feathered feet?

I'm sure I'll miss a breed or two but you'll find feathered legs on sultans, silkies, d'uccles, favrolles, brahmas, & cochins.

Ok last thing! We will have at least 5 Pita Pinta cockerels and 2-3 Basque cockerels for sale soon. They are 4 weeks now. Let me know if any of you are interested!

Also - Pita Pinta hatching eggs are officially for sale now too! I have a list going so please let me know if you are interested.

The bottom one is marked like a Sicilian Buttercup but they are not common. I would ask the feed store you got them from what breeds of bantams they ordered and what Hatchery they came from. Then you can look at that hatchery's list of bantam breeds. Going to www.feathersite.com and looking at the pictures of those breeds and what the chicks look like might also help you figure it out.

The other chicks all look like Cochins to me . .

I started today with the other mixed chick hatched and a partr rock that didn't make it As the day went on the little orps hatched and I was put on suicide watch with them. They wanted to squeeze through the metal grate of the crate. Not a smart move with 20+ big girls watching. I found some 1/4 inch plastic mesh that I zip tied to the door. The remaining rock egg got moved to the other OEGB who is brooding, if it hatches I'll move it back in the morning. It had pipped but since the first chick has been out for 2 days and it could use food and water.
