Awwww I am sorry to hear your eggs didn't hatch :(. I was looking forward to that too!
I have 4 of the eggs that are still in the incubator but Monet assures me that they are no good. We candle eggs together and she is much more cut throat at getting rid of them. I always hope that maybe they are just a little behind in development rather than early quitters. She is always right, though. I just couldn't bring myself to throw all 30 away. The eggs from my birds at the farm are developing nicely so I know it is not my incubator.

Well, the genetics aren't really as simple as that answer, there are some very very dark blue (because of other melanizers) that look almost black. Their underfluff is lighter though and the chicks look lighter in the chick down. But there is one main gene for BBS - that is Bl. No Bl (bl/bl) is Black, Bl/bl is Blue and Bl/Bl is Splash.

The only way you can prove it is truly genetically black though (no Bl) is to breed it to a known black. If any of the chicks are blue - its a dark blue.

Splash x Splash breedings will get lighter and lighter in time as the Bl gene removes/blocks more and more of the Black until they look very light or even white.
Yes genetics are not my strong suit, but what I was trying to compare it too was the bit of genetics way back in high school about eye color and the recessive gene. So although they may hatch out with the black coloring wouldn't they still carry the Blue gene and potentially hatch out blue chicks in the future. That is where my thought process was going with that one. :)
I have sexed chicks, juvie cockerels and adult roos in both.

Well I also have a Welsummer boy and one CL boy.

I sure wish I could keep roos.

I know the dark blue is why a lot of people want all black pens. Its hard to tell. I can't believe my fruit box guy has still not reposted on craigslist! I need to make pens!! ( I also need to put in kitchen countertops but I am less motivated about that....)

Thank you! I messaged her through FB a few weeks ago and I just saw that she is trying to get in contact with me but FB wouldn't let her. LOL!!! I'm so glad that you posted this!
Wow if you get some that are super pink like those that Ron just posted let me know! I would love some of those! I can't wait to get some Langshan to add to my group.

It was probably the weather and transit like you said. Out of the 15 Wheaten Ameraucanas I had shipped to me I got 4 to hatch. I am still really perplexed though on the ones that didn't hatch. They looked fully developed and quit at the end.

Make sure there is plenty of air getting into the room where they are being incubated and that humidity is not over 80% at hatch. Remember--lose the plugs and run with all vents open!

One of the biggest causes of late term death in the shell is suffocation.
