The firemen stuff is cracking me up!mossy you have to name her sesquilluon. She is one in many millions.
I have to whine a bit. I broke down off my " no vaccines" high horse and was trying to do what I can about the stuff brought in by wild birds that can hang around. So I vaccinated against in and Newcastle ( they come together)
After a whole bunch of research I found an Australian report that checked blood work etc and found that instead of every 8 weeks 90% of birds keep immunity around if you do it twice. So that was the plan.
There was a little aside that you could get some mild side affects on some birds with some coughs and rattling breathing.
OMG. 1/3 of my birds have sever symptoms. I finally did some deeper research and it said if it is a sever symptom give a course of tylan because of fear of secondary stuff coming in. So I'm sticking all these darn birds who are in a bad mood because they don't feel well but still have energy to fight me because they are not really sick!
It is working but this sucks! I have never taken antibiotics myself so I'm not keen on it . I gotten it in my mouth, stuck myself, squirted it on my foot.
And everyone hates me now. Ungrateful birds.
If this happens the second time I'm gonna shoot myself.
I put my first set of eggs that went to 104 in lockdown today but it dies not look good.
Wow, what a yucky day. I hope it gets better. Many hatching chicks and healthy bird wishes coming your way!
Hello everyone! I'm new to this website. Just became a chicken owner for the first time two days ago. We live on the coast near Mendocino. We have four week old chicks. Growing up, I had always wanted farm animals. Horses, chickens, etc. now that I am in my early forties, things are finally lining up. We are out in the country, and have plenty of room. This website has been a huge help. I was freaking out when the chicks would fall over asleep while walking and they looked dead. Hahaha I'm like a nervous first time mom again!
Hello and Welcome to BYC
And WELCOME to the wonderful world of chickens! Sounds like you have plenty of room.. so I suspect you will be in the 100s of chickens range by next year, especially if you start looking at all the chickens being shown on here, and find out all the people around you that have some really neat (and rare) birds.. but that's ok - we will all get along GREAT!
Chicks are hilarious when they sleep. I finally figured out why baby silkies have poofy heads too - its so when they fall asleep standing up they don't fall over. Their heads just go down until the poof touches the ground and they sleep that way. I do wish I had taken a picture when they were doing that - it is absolutely adorable (think ostrich)... They lay down to sleep now, so I will have to wait for the next batch to hatch to get some pictures.
And yes, sleep of the dead is scary. Especially when they just keel over - or when you find them in all sorts of distorted positions or face down in the food.
Usually my exclamation and gasp of dismay will make them start up and run away, so its only a momentary panic. They get over that in about a week and sleep (mostly) normal.
Chicks are also so much fun to watch. We call it "Chick TV" and it doesn't require a cable bill, much electricity (light bulb works) or even a TV, and you don't have to be over a certain age to watch either (although being able to focus your eyes does help). In a bit, when you get your first broodies you will find a second adorable channel - called the Broody Channel, its like Chick TV + the Learning Channel ... Just try to stay with one the first time, having too many is nerve wracking.
You are going to have so much FUN with the chickens! What chicks do you have now?
