California - Northern

I took some pictures of my Blue Australorps today. Two of them are Blue, one Cockerel and one pullet. Chet Hupp said that out of 4 pens and 39 hatched chicks he had one splash pullet and one blue pullet. With mine, I have a Blue pullet and a blue cockerel....

They are monsters at 8 weeks old!

They work great!!!!   I got 5 gallon buckets from home depot and installed 5 nippes in each.  I cut a hole in the lid of the bucket big enough to fit the hose so filling is easy.  I highly recommend.   Some feed stores sell them, but they charge a fortune for them ($2.50 each).  I bought mine off ebay for 50 cents each.  They come from China and take a couple of weeks to get so order early.

Would you mind posting a photo when you can. I try to describe things to dh and he just looks at me like I'm nuts?!?

ok, got frustrated trying to photograph chicks with my iphone, so dusted off my old DSLR -- so here are some updates! max crowing!! max jr. (SFH x CL, i'm pretty sure speedy was his mom) and eleanor -- max jr is nearly 6 weeks old already! the one pure isbar from Molly's eggs -- looking like it might be blue? with mom Daisy -- the chicks are nearly 3 weeks old the CL girl (from Deann) and splash-ish isbar/marans cross (from Molly) black-ish isbar/marans cross bella and her 10-day-old birchen marans chicks -- who are totally identical, i can't tell them apart at all the three araucanas, nearly 4 weeks old naptime for the splash, blue isbar, & boy CL the black isbar/marans again and the little splash again it is so fantastic to watch them all getting bigger!
You have some amazing Birds :)

The top dark egg is from a Partridge Penedesenca. The Blue one on the top right is a Dorking X Wheaten AM. The big speckled one is from my Blue Marans. The Green ones and the turquoise blue one are from my OEs. Oddly, one of the Cream Legbar X Crele Penes lays a Glossy blue egg! I bet it is the one with the black crest.

The other eggs are from Dorking crosses, HRIRs, Partridge Rocks and Hatchery reds. The big brown one on the bottom right is from my Golden comet--she lays the most amazing eggs!

She was 96 at the time, and had just gotten back from a trip to Russia right after they took down the wall. She was the oldest traveler in her group.

She lived to be over 100, so I think she might have been right.

When my Granny turned 100 I asked her "Granny, how did you live to be 100" she said "Pammie, I laughed all the way!"

It really simple advice....laugh...keep breathing...

where is the best place to buy feed from. The closest place to me is Jones feed then I would have to go way out to Hawes or Shasta lake or that feed store out on Desutes rd By the taco barn.

It really depends on what is important to you. No one in Redding carries anything I would feed by chickens. I order all of my feed from a company in Oregon that comes through Redding every 2 weeks. Every once in a while, they are out of stock. In that case, I drive down to Chico.

There is a ranch near me that I sold chickens to a couple of years ago. They sell pasture eggs and have their chickens in large open fields. I asked them if they ever had problems with hawks and they said rarely, but they commented that they have serious problems with crows. Apparently the crows in their area have learned to take down chickens in teams. There are tons of crows in my I have never had any problems, and keep my fingers crossed that I never do.

I have a friend in SoCal that recently saw a pair of ravens walk into her coop and take eggs! She has been watching for them now. They are doing it pretty regularly!
