such lovely pictures -- cats and chicks and broodies!

i have a cute story to share: put all the chicklets away into their coop just now, and as the fog is rolling in again & it's chilly, the mamas and their chicks all went up the ramp pretty early -- i watched them all in, as the youngest marans chicks have been having trouble jumping up into the nesting box their mom settles in, so wanted to be on hand to help (one did it on its own, one needed assistance) -- but black australorp Daisy, whose chicks are 3 weeks old, apparently decided to show them all how to roost -- first she perched on one of the lower branches, & they all (five!) followed suit, arranged in various spots on the perches. then Daisy moved over to the PRIME roosting spot, on the highest branch (where Max usually roosts) -- and all five chicks followed, with three snuggled underneath her on the branch and *two* perched on her back.

crazily adorable!!!

did i have a camera with me? of course not!!

you'll just have to use your imagination -- i just loved how proud those two babies on her back looked, being up so high! (i'm sure they'll all get dislocated back to a nesting box, once Max & the other girls decide to go to bed.)
That sounds adorable!!! Wish you had pictures, but you did a good job of giving a visual!

Sorry about the quote minus a reply. I just can't get the hang of this...guess I need to practice posting more, or read the tutorial... Anyway, the sick kitten story sounds all too familiar. They may want to check for FIP as well. We lost THREE to FIP on separate occasions within the last 5 years. It's more common than you think with strays/shelter kittens.

awsome. very pretty.
Mine is not show quality I got him from a breeder in Elverta that had a heart condition that was selling everything she had.
he is a snow. it is neat he started white with a brown nose. got spots then they faded and then came back

He is BEAUTIFUL!!! The lady I got my female from had some of the snow leopard kittens and I wanted one so bad, but they were all males and I had my heart set on a female kitten. Maybe next time

This is as close as I can get without having a macro lens :/

It's just a feather follicle. Absolutely nothing to worry about and totally normal (since this is a marans X). If that were on a clean legged breed, it would be a "stub" and cause for DQ from the show table (unless you pulled it out first, LOL).

I use a tablet. I have a heck of a time with long posts, I can't see my replies. I gave up trying to use multi quote.

I do admire the vounteers at the shelters, they do so much for the animals. I do have a problem with an animal being placed that is to small to treat and needing treatment. I'm still itchy thinking about the earmites.

A few years ago we got a hatchery polish with an extra toenail on the side of her first toe.

Low egg production?
My girls range from 1-3 years old. They're barred rocks, rirs, new hampshires, and black sex links. I have 27. I get about 12-14 eggs a day. They're fed fermented feed (layer crumble) and get lots and lots of fresh vegis and fruit from our restaurants. They have a light that gives them 15+ hours of light a day. Fresh clean water, plenty of room. Only one rooster. What is wrong? Are the older ones too old? These are my layer hens and were from a feed store/factory. Thanks for any suggestions.
