Our Cuckoo Maran Baby (a year old) was missing last night when we did our chicken count... Found her dead this am in the dog house.

We had lots of water and puddles all over for all our chickens to cool in the heat. They are free range and we have big trees everywhere.

She was our only dark layer and a real sweetie! I'm learning the loss of chickens is a part of havering them. Hope she didn't suffer! I have no idea why she passed...

I am so sorry about your Marans Baby! I lost a FBCM Cockerel and Pullet in two or the heat waves last year.

HangTownFarms has Penedesencas and White Emps. Both can take the heat and lay nice large dark eggs. I am working on getting Blue, Dark and regular egg layers that can take the heat. Now if I can figure a way to get the Green egg layers from Whiting Farms in Colorado.....

Ron, we got the same brand and kind as you only the hose is 1/4" and not 3/8". We hung it up in the run and put it on a battery ran timer. Is it an acquired taste because our flock doesn't seem to want to sit under them? :O

We also got them an automatic waterer (will take pics) and they are on and off using it still have the old one up too. They have been panting a lot and one night we got home and our Roos were roosting and panting and had droopy wings. We gave them fresh old water and they perked back up. Been putting "chick boost" in their water too. Is there anything else we can do to make them more comfy?

Also, does your automatic waterer have a holding tank or is it directly house water on a pressure reducer? If it's a holding tank, you can drop a 2 liter bottle of ice in the tank to make the supply colder.

Hi guys

I rescued a few of my grandma's chickens when she passed... I'm attaching a super short video of Marie. When I got her, her back was about to bleed from the roo... She's looking a lot better now, but there is something wrong with her right leg. She hops around, she's eating & drinking, but not laying. I palpate her foot & she's fine. I notice that the 1st joint up toward her thigh is a bit inflamed, but I don't feel anything that feels broken. I want to splint her, but I don't know what part to splint :/ I'm worried about her. I have her with the teenagers so the ladies won't peck on her. They started being mean, but I don't know if it's better for her to roost or sit flat at night. The video is only 13 seconds. She vomited right after, but it was really hot & she just had a lot of water...

BCollie, I would rather fill feeders LESS often, so I would opt for the 10# feeder. My flock can eat any time they want. Some still think freshly poured feed is the very best, though. Not like that other stuff just like it IN the feeders. However, having feed available 24/7 keeps me from being mobbed by the entire flock at once when I top off the feeders.

I agree, we have the big feeders and waterers because sometimes during the week, because we're working, we just don't have the time to refill all 4 pens everyday. Since it was to hot yesterday I replaced all waterers with fresh water, couldn't believe how warm it was! But at least we can go away for a week and the most we have to ask anyone to do is open the coops in the morning, close them at night and take a peek at food and water to see if they need it.
