Hope you get a good hatch this time!

they are now about three weeks and have brown shoulders. hoping that indicates hens lol
On the three I have it didn't make a difference. Two were fast feathering, one had none on the back, stubby tail and I was sure that was a boy. I was wrong. But one of the fast feathering ones was.

Jerry mentioned that at 3 or 4 weeks you can often see black chest feathers coming in on the boys. i will wait to make sure either way. as of now not much for chest feathers

I have a question (and it may sound silly) how do you keep things fresh when baking for fairs? I have always wanted to enter something, but can never figure out how to enter the freshest entry possible.

No silly at all. I've had plenty of other experienced exhibitors ask me the same question. I stage my preparations. This year was an exception, I've spent so much time with chickens I didn't start baking until 16 days in advance. Normally, all my cookie doughs are done and frozen two months in advance. Then just need to defrost and bake them on submission day. Quick breads are baked and frozen a month in advance. Yeast breads are baked and frozen two weeks in advance. Candy is made and just set aside a week in advance. The last three days I am busy with last minute baking. Creams pies are done two days in advance, fruit pies are done the day of submission. Baking powder biscuits are usually cooling in the car on the way there, LOL. You just have to get a feel for what will taste fresh done in advance and what must be done the day things are turned in.

Thanks for all the good wishes everyone, I'm beat tonight, so I'll give you some results tomorrow.........but I did well, I was happy.

Got rid of my confirmed Icelandic boy and my suspected Icelandic boy yesterday. A colleague of mine took them and I told him that I would let him know where he can get a pullet or two. I got mine from Deann but she hatched them from eggs she got in a BYC swap so I I don't think she breeds them but I know Happy Chooks and Debs Flock both do right?

I had to split up my choc rock pair :-( I am keeping the pullet...Godiva who is as sweet as her name and will be coop mates with Curly and my little Porking, Petunia. But I couldn't keep him. I told my colleague that he may be able to get hatching eggs from Renee but he has no bator yet. When I get a broody I may buy half dozen from her and try to hatch him a little girl. I wasn't going to keep the pullet but she is an on your arm, shoulder, head curious little lap chicken and she is cool looking so what was I to do?

I have encouraged him to join BYC and this forum in particular and will do so again but if any one else breeds Icelandics and may have pullets for him can you let me know. Thanks

I envy those of you with gardens. I love to garden and grew up growing things. It's like magic. I think that maybe next year if we can figure out a way to keep chickens and deer and peacocks out and still have it be attractive we may give it a go! At Mar Vista where My DH took me for our anniversary they have raised beds made from cinder blocks. Herbs and flowers were planted in the holes in the cinder blocks and other stuff was planted in the beds.

Going to put the finish touches on the quarantine pen today. I will give them a head of cabbage but what sort of things should I give my new ones while they are in there to help them deal with the confinement? I have closed off one end of the feed shed so they can have some space outside the XL dog kennel but it is still all inside space since the girls free range. Any Idea?? the space is about 4 feet deep by 5.5 feet wide.

Enjoy another cool day you guys!

Yes, I have Icelandics. I'm not sure if I have any extra girls right now, but I always have eggs and I can always hatch out some chicks.

It was less that it was a burger and more that I was sitting down and being waited on. It's the closest restaurant to the fairgrounds and I was ready to sit after three straight days on my feet in the kitchen.

I will try to get some face pictures and leg pictures but I only have these two of the tops of them in my phone right now. I was trying to see if their crest feathers were becoming pointier and does the development of their tails give anything away?

Anyone else that see's anything feel free to provide your opinion too!

I've found crests stay round and compact on girls and get longish and start to fall to the sides on boys fairly early.

It seems like the affected toes are painful for them (and why wouldn't it be walking on curled toes?), so tonight I am going to try to wrap up their feet with the toes straight and I have started giving them the Poly vi Sol which has some B vitamins in it.

Anyone else have any ideas, suggestions, comments?

It's way too late to fix those toes. It has to be done within a couple of days of hatch. As long as the bird can get around okay, you can just leave it alone. Otherwise it will need to be culled.

I went down the hill today to Sacramento for a dental appointment. Routine prophylaxis. Some small bit of decay was discovered; I whined "But I'll be sixty in August - I am well past the cavity prone years!"

My dentist agreed, "Yes, you are. But you have a lot of OLD work that's failing, and allowing decay to occur.". He looked at me through glasses slid down the bridge of his nose. "It doesn't mean you are scarfing down sugary things and not brushing correctly."

I really like my dentist, the hygienist, and the office manager. They are the reason I have not tried to find a closer dental practitioner. (Plus, I get nitrous oxide even when I'm just having my teeth cleaned.)

I always take them some eggs; this time I brought two dozen in a re-purosed carton, with each of the four rows of six eggs a difference color: medium to dark brown, light olive green, pale blue, and creamy pinkish.

On my way home, I stopped at Green Acres Nursery to buy a few floating water lettuce plants to place in the skippy filter for my pond. And my favorite fruit stand on the property where they actually grow the strawberries right there, freshly picked each day. Big, juicy, fragrant strawberries. Heaven. And the flock will get the tops after I founder myself on the fruit.

With mine it was easier to see the reddish feathers on the girls chest. The boys head started get more black than the two girls, it was real obvious. If I can get BYC to let me post pictures I will show you but I tried before and nothing.

I just went to Green Acres for the first time about two weeks ago. I need to go back when I have eight hours to wander the aisles. I only had an hour and came home with nearly $100 in plants!

I'm always hitting the strawberry stands!

If you want local, try Main Street Dental in DS. My dentist Henifin just retired in January, but the other Dr. in the office is great too. Great staff, hygienist, chairside and front office. And they have every piece of office equipment/toy you can think of. When I changed to their practice, I discovered your teeth aren't supposed to be sensitive all the time
