skipping reading the last 10 pages. Having an emotional meltdown. I have been reading the processing support thread and was almost ready to take care of the LOUD australorp hen turned honkin rooster and LO AND BEHOLD we had a bear attack. Tore down our yard fence and busted into my outdoor brooder. gutted and left 4 8 weekers slaughtered allover the ground behind a tree. At least the Coyotes actually eat every bite!!! so on top of wrapping my brain around processing this roo with the horror of my family in my ears, i get to go clean up the babies from all over the yard. AND its a smalish bear. ugs harder to hear AND he didnt even touch the grain which tells me he is a thriving garbage bear. The worst to deal with since they are off their diet and hybernation schedule and are ruined. They do not act like a normal bear anymore. So ****** im sitting here crying.
I am so sorry..... how awful. I was just thinking the other day what would keep a bear out? I mean they can get into cabins and cars. A regular chicken pen has to be just as easy.

THEN Chiquita mentioned electric wire. Since you have bear lovers with no helpful solutions other than don't generate garbage, I think I would try the electric wire..... on high! I don't have anything against bears, except when they take what is mine! Keep your paws off!

All cleaned up. Now I'm mad... It's quite an emotional roller coaster ya know?

The agency here would be bear league and some of them sound a lot like PETA people:-( the problem is available garbage !

It would only support the opinion of banning my hens..... So out with the bells on the doors, the dog sleeping in her run , the pellet gun loaded, and additional latches giving more fumbling time to the bear and more running time to me. He has to see it as "not worth it " to come here. The only way.
Thank you for the hugs. Of course they were the sweetest.. Cuckoo
Marans, buf brahma , and ee:-(((()

Now of to the DIY , tire rotation and check for nails( pressure sensor keeps going off) driving school( new teenage driver) , AND I'm hoping for a txt saying my daughter in law is in labor. What have I signed up for in this life of mine!?!

Ron , my opinion of your character increases with each if your post! I may pm u if I can't do it this afternoon. I'm pretty far here in south lake. But I struggle with the unknown ( ultra OCD I guess) and have never even watched.... And have no family helpers....
Is a pellet gun strong enough to get a bear to move on?

I am thinking latches wouldn't help a whole lot against a bear would it? Since they can push down a giant tree they could just push their way in.....

I like the Electric Fence idea. Zap Em!

Ron is a nice guy huh? That was a great offer. Way to go Ron!

We have to many littles to use electric wire . The extra latches would only give us a few seconds to hear the bells jingle and run for the paint ball gun or pellet gun. Neither would penetrate the skin but they would be scared between the noise the thump on the but and the dog charging. If we fired off my 9 or worse the ar we would be arrested. No discharge in the Tahoe basin. Felony.

400

Its so difficult to get pictures of chicks they move so much.

All 4 of the fertile eggs I put under Beakface hatched. One orangey baby, two champagney babies and a yellowy baby w/ varying degress of chipmonkey markings. All were billed as Ameraucanas or Araucanas (at 25 cents an egg so I knew better) then I saw the breeding pen. As for these babies: Pink legs on all 4 puffy cheeks on two. Tails on all but I don't care. So far BF has been a great mommy and this was just her trial run so I know that next time I can give her some purchased eggs. When she does set again I am thinking SPR and silver Campine eggs from Deb :-)

Everyone is giving the mommy and babies a wide berth except for one of my EE adolescents who wandered into the nesting area and encountered two Australorps one laying an egg and one tending to babies. They both gave her the business and she bolted.

Abba I am again so sorry for the loss of your birds. Wish I could say or do more :-(

I am so sorry, that is a terrible thing to happen. I really don't know what would work to deter bears, except having dogs outside running them off at night - and even that would be scary because bears are much larger and stronger than dogs... I will have to ask my mother what she did when she lived up in Lake County. She had chickens, and there were bears - but she didn't put any garbage outside. I know her chicken wire stopped a golden eagle who was going to eat her chickens - it bounced around for awhile and took off again - my mom had to put a new fence post up in the center though. I think her chicken coop was a solid structure - more like a house than a coop. Maybe that's what worked for her, I don't know.
