Archaeology is lots of fun! And it compliments my hobby of digging up my backyard (aka gardening).

I'm a vegetarian, so I had deep-fried cheese curds, zucchini, and, oddly enough, deep-fried watermelon. Apparently that is a new thing?! I can't say that I'm a fan of warm watermelon, maybe it takes a more (or less) sophisticated palate to appreciate!
Wow an archaeologist! What a cool job! What kind of deep fried foods did you eat? (off limits on my torturous diet, living vicariously through you)

Deep fried watermelon, how strange! The cheese curds and zucchini sound really good. I went to the Stanislaus County fair and there weren't any chickens in the chicken area except meat birds? Guess I went too early in the fair. They had hatching eggs and chicks/ducklings which were pretty cute though.

I don't want warm anything in the heat and warm watermelon goes against what watermelon is good for! Light and refreshing when its hot out.!!!!! Duh!
That bear attack still scares me I hope it does not come back tonight!
Love the pic.
Yes we shoot from the deck... I totally forgot the air horn. Thanks. That is one thing they loath ! When we first moved to Tahoe a 500 lb male was marking the trees in the front yard. I banged a pot at him and he shoved his head into the bathroom window where I was and grumphed at me. I'm upstairs for sure now!
Holy cow!!!!!! Good thing you were in the bathroom. I would have for sure messed myself if that happened to me!
I went to the Fair on Sunday, but I didn't see any chicken experts in the Fur and Feathers area! Actually, I was a little disappointed that they had all the rabbits in there, and none of the show chickens. Which isn't to say that I didn't enjoy the chicks and ducklings immensely! My boyfriend (who tolerates my chicken obsession) had a serious bonding moment with the ducklings, which I thoroughly encouraged. Then we ate as many deep-fried things as possible. I haven't been online much since starting a new job (kind of my dream job, working as an archaeologist in California) but I enjoy my catch-up sessions on the Northern California thread! Sorry for all the hardships and congratulations on all the new chicks, everyone!
Now that would be an interesting job.

That IS exciting! My Australian degree is in archaeology. But I suck at languages and you need to read at least 4 to graduate so I was having an issue.

Still I am no longer allowed to discuss hair pin and pig bones at sinner parties or I get thrown out. I was a neolithic major don't know much about native cal cultures. Do you get in trouble for discussing shellfish and acorns?

So sorry for the bear loss. We've had them at the end of the street a couple of times and scat in the back half of the property. Some neighbors have had good luck with hot wires keeping bears out.

It is super silly but bears and cattle scare me silly. My great uncle kept rodeo stock at his place during the off season, they demand your full attention.

I focused on osteoarchaeology, so while I do enjoy shellfish and acorns, I usually get in trouble at parties for discussing...uh...burial practices. Sometimes pig bones! Sometimes chicken bones! Really, detailed human and animal anatomy of any sort. (But not dinosaurs. Never dinosaurs). I'm not too experienced with Californian archaeology (having been to school in Canada and England), but because I have excavated burials all over the world, I am apparently eligible to excavate burials here. And the local archaeological consulting firms seem to be in need of people who are good at differentiating human from animal bones, when all the bones are in tiny pieces and crushed by a mechanical excavator. The dig I just finished up was actually in San Jose, they had to remove a burial ground before putting in a new BART station.

Are you from Australia, or did you just go to school there? I have been to New Zealand, but never Australia! It seems like an awesome place, although I think that is one of the only countries other than the US with such high tensions between academia and native peoples where archaeology is concerned.

I feel guilty for not talking enough about chickens. My friend just moved to the country outside of Elk Grove and his family is considering getting some chickens. If anyone has any extra pullets that they think would be good "starter chickens" let me know, they have a long way to go (their yard isn't landscaped at all, and they would need time to build a coop and run) but I thought I'd see if I could get a few breed recommendations/availabilities to throw their way.

now that would be scary. Bears had better be careful on our side. up here if a Bear sticks its head in your window that is what we call a do it yourself wall mount trophy

I love your auto-correct, chiqita! I would think that you could discuss all kinds of taboo things at a sinner party!!! Thank you so much for the morning laugh!!!!

I processed two Bresse on Sunday without any help. When they all woke up that day, They did not even know that I had processed them.

Ron, I hate to be the one to tell you, but if the two Bresse woke up then you didn't process them correctly...

my goodness, it's been a busy week -- hard to catch up! so sorry to read about the bear problem!

my only exciting news is that i managed to give 4 pullets to a friend yesterday, which brings my grow-out pen down to a more manageable number (10, 3 are boys) -- just in time, as the two broodies will be hatching some baby campines (eggs from Deb) in about 5 days or so!
