Does anyone know what a reasonable price for a rooster of his age/looks would be?

So, basically this is the same question for some Barnevelder roosters (2 black, 2 blue) from TLS Ranch (Trisha's flock). What, if anything is reasonable to charge for these guys? They hatched 5/11/2013. All 4 get along fine...I'd be willing to bring them to anyone who wants them for pets/breeding rather than eating, but I wondered if I should be charging anything before I listed them in the for sale section of backyard chicken.

Thanks for your help! They are such pets that I'm wishing we were allowed to have roosters here.

I'll preface this by saying I'm no expert, but unless you can find someone out there that specifically wants that type of rooster, you'll have a hard time finding them a "pet" home. There are tons of pet roosters out there right now looking for homes. You might be better off not knowing what the eventual plans for them will be. If you figure half of all chicken hatched are roosters- then that you only need 1 for 5-10 hens, plus all the people that can't have any roosters. There are just tons of them out there. Last year I had so much drama and stress about trying to find good homes for my little chicks that turned into roosters. It was a huge hassle. This year I just make some delicious chicken and dumplings. Your guys are beautiful!! I hope you can find them a good home.
There will be two or three more Small Animal Exchanges in Orange vale this year. There is a rooster rescue there. They are not eaten, so if you are looking for a place to send them then that will not eat them.

Put them up for sale on Craigs list or advertise them on the sales thread on BYC. Sometimes someone really wants a Special Rooster.

I am going to get one of the Basque hen Cockerels to a Californian. He really needs one and these are special since they do not come from a flock that was outcrossed to Wheaten or Crele penedesenca--I bet Crele since the Basque hens look similar--There is a big problem with leg color in the Basques because of the out crossing. Yellow legs are sexlinked to the male so these little guys with their perfect yellow legs are needed by some. White legs is a Disqualifier for the Spanish SOP for Basque.

I had the same problem with my Broody SG Dorking. She sat on the eggs like a trooper but did not care for the chicks.

I gave her one chance and then put them into the brooder.

since i won't be home tomorrow anyway, don't have a real brooder set up, and Fran the SPPR seems perfectly tolerant of the babies snuggling under her if they want/need to, but isn't fighting for them, it occurred to me -- i can close their pop door and just leave them in the henhouse tomorrow -- there's lots of space to roam around, there's food and water, and if the sussex is still being inattentive, they can warm up under Fran.

the weaker one that was under the EcoGlow seemed much more vigorous again after i woke it up, so it's back down with mama too, but they're all in the henhouse. i'll check on them again before dark, hopefully the four of them can figure it out one way or another. once the babies are both strong enough to follow the sussex around, i think she might be a fine mom -- it's just getting them to that point!

in the other pen, Dixie the cuckoo marans has stayed in the henhouse all day with her one remaining chick, which seems to be doing very well -- the only problem is, she keeps chasing out the other big girls who come in to get to the nest boxes to lay their eggs! at least, she chases the lower-ranking ones out.

i swear, chicken drama!

I know! Chicken Drama is crazy sometimes.

I hope your SPPR will take better care of the chicks. Those Campines are cuties.

i just checked them again, and each hen was in her own box, each with one chick underneath (plus six eggs in Fran's case) -- so i moved the wayward baby over to "real" mom with its sibling and will check them all again in the morning.

thanks for "listening" to all my trials and tribulations, it helps to type everything out!

My first quail eggs, except the one that got dropped. The one in the middle has a cream base, the ones on the ends are green. That surprised me.

They are actually a blue egg with an overcoat (bright blue on the inside). I had a totally midnight blue egg from one of my quail

Laura, sorry your broodies are struggling with their babies. I hope it all works out.

I remember when you posted that egg. DH threw the broken one in the garbage before I could check it out. I love the boys crow!

Since I get to set up coop lay out I may enter ours as a pen of 3, then they can be next to the pair DD is entering. Fewer chicken chores at home and just for giggles for the public.

Part of the danger of being retired is time to indulge in fantasy fulfillment. Your pizza shot immediately triggered my yearning for a pizza oven! I thought about incorporating one into the backyard when we redid it last year. The price of purchasing one made DIY the best option, but left it out as had plenty other projects to do. DH is a Celiac and cannot enjoy pizza unless crust is GF. I'd like to find a decent crust option for him. I want to give a try to your dough. Would love to try using some thinly sliced Dakota sausage we get in Lockeford. Have tomatoes a plenty to add as topping. Oink oink. Thanks for sharing.
I found a recipe that should work for you. Scroll down the page for the pizza crust recipe. It is Gluten Free.
