Cheerleader Hens? One of my not-yet-laying girls (Agnes) had been in and out of the nest box all morning. And everytime she would go hop in there, Fanny (who's been laying like clockwork), would go stand in the doorway of the coop and start singing the egg song. This went on for almost 2 hours. Fanny had already laid this morning, so it literally looks like Fanny is just in there for moral support "cheering" Agnes on.... Hens are so weird. And yes, Agnes eventually laid an egg and Fanny went back to foraging in the run.

Yes! cheerleader hens, oh and roosters too--they will sing the egg song along with the hen laying the egg.

Perhaps she feels like that handsome devil is a good protector of her secret place. Bet she will lay an egg there at some point. There are chicken figurines, hens, roosters, chicks, made from various media in my house, on my covered front porch, and out in the yard. I was quite fond of a metal rooster which looked so good perched on the side deck railing. It was noticeable as one walked up the driveway toward the house. The deck is on the South side of the house. The chicken coop is to the south of the house at the top of my circular driveway. Most of the poultry activity takes place around that portion of the property, although they range freely over the whole two-thirds of an acre. I kept finding the metal rooster on the floor of the deck or down below it on the ground. It would be fine for a day or two, then it would fall off somehow. I kept moving iy to a different spot, trying to keep "wind gusts" from catching its impressive set of tail-feathers. And then I saw Carl, my dominant rooster, kick that metal rooster's butt.

good news here: there are still three campine chicks peeping away! the weak one that was having trouble yesterday made it through the night, and was happily tucked under its mama's wing when i checked just now. am keeping them in the henhouse today, rather than letting her out into the run -- probably tomorrow too -- just to let them get strong enough to keep up with her when she wants to teach them to forage.
