California - Northern

I have a hen that is over a year old. She laid for a few months and then suddenly stopped months ago. She is not molting. She is very active, good eater, pooper lol, runs with the others but isn't laying eggs anymore. Sometimes she will sit in a lay box for a bit but leaves never having laid an egg. She is one of 2 of my only green egg layers so I know its her that is not egg laying. Her sister had bumble foot and even laid in her crate all the way through her treatment! But no eggs from the other girl. I am not really into feeding chickens that just eat and not put out- has anyone ever had this happen with a young layer? She's not ill that I can tell. She just stopped laying (no she isn't laying on hidden nests). I'm bummed!

So glad you got a chance to check in. I've wondered how you've been doing, missed your beautiful pictures also. Hope they give you a few more breaks to check in.

Yes, they will do that with Mareks.

I had one stop laying and at about 22 months old die. You should be able to find a pet home for her. She is quite cute.

nice to see you again! and yes, several of my year-olds have taken a "break" in laying, usually when others are broody -- i don't know if it's being bothered by all the squabbling over nesting boxes, or just solidarity with the broody girl, or what -- but particularly my two Amelias (CLxpene crosses, aka green egg layers) and my CL Lucy, plus one of the two marans is barely laying anything now that her sister is broody.

but they do restart after a while...

Yes, it could be molting. The first molt is often very easy without too many feathers lost.

EEs also stop laying when it is hot. Forget the rehoming post, give her more time.

Other than hatching eggs- I haven't had any new birds since the chicks I got from you. They were all super healthy. I don't allow anyone with chickens on my property either. No one is sick or has been ill appearing since last summer (when we determined through a necropsy my flock was dealing with mold). So weird. Should I suspect Mareks in my flock? No one else has stopped for no reason. We are getting nearly a dozen a day right now and that's minus the broodies eggs which I guess I will be missing for a while despite breaking them. lol

I'll hold out a while. Everyone likes her so it won't be hard to see if she picks back up. Her EE sister has continued to lay a consistent 3-4 eggs a week since she began laying last fall. Otherwise I don't think I would have noticed anything off. We are enjoying the heat wave break this week- don't know about you all! Whew!

Ok will hold off on any action. It's possible it's heat related too I guess. I am waiting for some to molt. Some of my girls are looking a wee bit rough. lol

My flock doesn't seem to be all that interested in the BOSS I offer. I find I do best if I mix it in their food but if I toss it out- they ignore it. Anyone elses chickens do this? I feel so out of the loop!

Have a missed any cool new chicken food/feeding trends, bedding, chicken care or anything while I've been 'away'? :D
