i love the idea of a guard-wallaby!

sad news here -- one of my isbar/marans crosses, the beautiful splash one, has disappeared -- i know she was in the coop friday evening, everyone was out free-ranging all day yesterday, and when i put everyone away in the evening, she was nowhere to be found. was half-hoping she'd reappear over night, but no sign today, either. i was home all day & never heard the commotion of a predator, so it's something of a mystery.
I hate mysteries unless the have a happy ending. Or any ending.... Open ended mysteries really get to me.

OOooooooh! Poison oak eating chickens! I wonder if eating their eggs will allow you to develop an immunity to poison oak, like drinking goat's milk from goats that are eating poison oak does.

I think I may have to fence off a part of the hill from predators and let the chickens have a go at that poison oak!
What? Really?
Well then you might want to be careful handling them if you are allergic to poison oak - because it will be on their undersides and their feet.

Once I get my area cordoned off I can test it for you - but I do know homeopathic works similarly. A very tiny dose of the irritant on the inside will build your immunity to it. Some people used to eat pieces of young poison oak leaves but I think that is too high a dosage.

I use the homeopathic tablets anytime I get into that nasty stuff. I used to get it really badly - whole arm swollen, red, pussy and itching from just brushing against it. Now I get a bump - or a welt (if I smacked myself with a stick) and I take my tablets when it starts to itch - wash it off with Tecnu and forget I ever had it. If I really got into it (pulling it up by the roots with bare hands, for example

(yes, I did that once by mistake)) then maybe I will have to take the tablets for a day or so. Much better than before!
So what are in those tablets? and what is Tecnu?
searching for poison oak and goat's milk turned up this article from UC Davis, saying the toxin does NOT transfer through their milk -- although it's an old article...

Still interesting......

So, I want to hatch some eggs from my chickens, and I'm trying to figure out what might be cool to hatch. I only have the Salmon Favorolle rooster, but lots of different hens. I have SLW, GLW, Barred Rock, Australorp, OE's, Buff LF Cochin, and EE's (one wheaten-ish). I don't really need a bunch more chickens (and mixed chicks are hard to sell), so I just want to set a few that could turn into something cool. Any suggestions? If I hatch the eggs from my Favorolle roo, and my wheaten"ish' pullet, would the chicks be able to be color sexed early, like the favorolles?

Well maybe it's something lovely like she's sitting on a nest somewhere.

Most of the sexlink crosses involve gender linked barring. I do not know how that will work with the crosses you have.

I bet Deb knows!

Poison oak and homeopathic tablets. I have been using them since the mid '80s. I am amazed at how well they work, and how fast. They are called Poison Ivy/Oak Tablets and they are from Hyland: http://www.amazon.com/Hylands-Poison-Ivy-Tablets-Pack/dp/B001EPQ9QY - from Amazon but you can also find them at the local drug stores. I am not an "all natural girl" and I will take regular medication if it works - but I have had bad reactions to cortisone so I was willing to try something different. They work. I keep them with me at all times because I never know when I am going to do something stupid like pull up a root that isn't what I thought it was, go in and wash my hands like regular and find out later I just spread the poison oak all over my hands and arms. Usually I find out when I am somewhere other than home - so they come with me.

I was talking to a lady at a yard sale, she had a little girl with her that looked miserable - all puffed up, red and itchy on her hands, arms and face. The girl had poison oak, badly. She was on her way down to the doctors to get a cortisone shot and just stopped in for a minute because they were waiting for an appointment time, poor kid looked so miserable. I told her mother about the tablets, and offered her two. She accepted and gave them to her daughter. She was going to leave to go to the appointment when she noticed her daughter wasn't hanging around complaining any more, she was over watching the chickens. The lady called and said it was time to go but the daughter didn't want to leave. Then the mother noticed the red was gone, the swelling was almost completely gone and her daughter wasn't itching any more. I think she called the doctors and canceled the appointment, and went up to the local drug store and bought a bottle. This was maybe 5 minutes? I can't think of any better advertisement for it, other than it works for me - if I get poison oak I scratch - look at the bump - go get my tablets and take two and no more scratching and the bump goes away.

Tecnu is a oil remover that was developed to be used to remove radiation. The creator took it home to show his wife, and she asked if it would remove oils. They tested it on poison oak on skin and it took it right off - and unlocked and removed the oils so they didn't spread. I have used the original Tecnu since they brought it out, but there is a new 2 second scrub that stops the itch and removes the oils too. Also at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Tecnu-Extreme...ie=UTF8&qid=1376261040&sr=1-2&keywords=Technu and probably available at local drug stores too.

Your Fav boy would be really pretty over the EE, but I do not know if the color is close enough to Wheaten genetically to color sex them early. I think the Buff would be Smutty Buff - its up to you if you want solid Buff birds with smidges of Black. I think the Australorps would all be black. Not sure what it would do to any of the laced ones - mix it up for sure. Oooh - over Barred Rock WOULD give you autosexing chicks - all the chicks with the white dots on their heads would be boys! Girls would have no barring. What colors are the Cochins?

I was think more along the lines of the color difference in the male/female for both the Salmon favorolle, and the wheaten. I'm kinda in the dark on chicken color genetics though. Maybe I should do some studying.

thanks for the thought, but she's only 13-14 weeks old or so, so it's a bit early for that. i think it's just the danger of being a light-colored chicken in an on-the-edge-of-the-wild location.

other note of interest -- a few of the older girls are starting to molt, there's suddenly feathers everywhere. none look too drastic (yet?), but that would explain the recent drop-off in egg production!

Yes, that does nix the eggs for a while.

Up the protein and give them some or more Black Oil Sun Flower Seeds--Helps them grow new feathers.

Laura, that sucks. I'm sorry about your loss!

We have been madly cleaning today due to a surprise visit from my mother. The house is a TOTAL disaster, now its only bad. But she knows I have not been home for 3 weeks now, lol. Thank goodness I got that last hatch of breese out with mothers, 40 chicks in the office is hard to hide!

While out cleaning today I found the sad reason for my fertility problem :(. Herman died this afternoon. he was from the cage that had the merriks chickens, so Id imagine that's it, he had been very skinny and I was worried about him. No other symptoms besides the whole dying thing, however, so it could be something else. All the 4 remaining girls are eating and frisky, so I'm praying that is it. I'm keeping all my remaining chicks just in case however, I had to call 2 people and tell them only silkies from me atm, I have one sad petting zoo, lol.

No one else on the property has had any symptoms whatsoever, so I'm thinking the turkey thing works. I'm putting flame in there with the girls. So its partridge over white and black partridge. Flame is ginger and Josephine's boy, so he has black and partridge genes. Since he sneaks into ever pen I have and contaminates my hens, LORD knows he is fertile. I'm going to start using big ol bird in there too to try and keep the poor things healthy. The poor little money pits are just not having the best luck. Flame is not quite as spectacular as Herman or my silkie black boys are, so I may switch a black silkie boy in there at some point to get some beefier crests and better toe feathering. he is also REALLY red partridge, so his neck and comb have some red to them rather than being 100% black. I'll have to see if that passes on or not. And watch for nekkind butt syndrome. Herman seemed to not be passing that along on the few chicks I got.

Flame is trying to court up a storm but the girls are not having it. They did not seem so fond of Herman, they all preferred Maxx the roo I lost first. It will be an interesting week.
