Debs-flock, a county free of varmints made me giggle. I used to have to rent a kitchen to make jams etc. It was on the other side of town and only available late at night. Garbage night it was a challenge to get home without hitting half a dozen assorted animals. I haven't seen a porqipine out here yet.

Ya they will peck anything shiny. Ducks are nibblers too. The muscovys still like to tuck their heads under my hair and nibble my neck. Butthey are very gentle.

I feed similar to greyes, but I have coops that are just layers and they do get layer pellets. I toss them a grain mix as a treat in the am, and any veggies I don't use for canning or fresh sales. They come running hoping I have a treat. Breeding pen and chicks get game feed (21% protein). The feeders always have feed in them, they hold 2 days worth so if I'm late getting out they still have food.
Why the game feed? Why the higher protein?

You mean they wouldn't cram into my 10"x12" Havahart trap for a third of a can of cheap cat food? Maybe I could leave a raccoon in there for bait? I don't think I'd want to find the mountain lion with that trap caught over it's head. It might be peeved!

The bantams were very picky eaters when we got them so I choose to give them a higher protein. The BLRW eggs are for hatching and I feel better giving them a boost up on their feed. Chicks get it due to it's small size and I like to think they are benefitting from the higher protein.

Ok. I have a layer pen and breeding pens. Do they lay better or are healthier with game feed, higher protein, for breeding?

You know.... I am really not seeing the appeal of Turkeys......
:idunno
I only got mine through the First Annual Cinco De Mayo Turkey Hatchaton.... Got sucked into that one somehow

Gosh, turkeys are sweet, silly birds. Plus, if you decide they aren't for you..... Family dinner! (So sayeth the person who is buying property to keep from processing extra roosters.)

Yes to hatching better. Some think that too much protein will make them lay less.

Roosters are not supposed to have extra calcium--it hurts their kidneys.
