Hi Debs_flock! Do you have any Serama eggs I can get for my broody silkie? I only need a few. Maybe a silkie egg or two also The Serama and BCF are my favorite and I only have 1 Serama. I was gonna see if I could just get a couple of your birds but I can try eggs under my girl... Thank you!

To capayvalleychick: Your Dorkings are beautiful! So fluffy! When will you next be in Davis? Also which feed store do you use? I always just drop by Western...they have big bags of King which my hens seem almost TOO fond of. They're little piggies.

Thank you. I go to Western Feed once a month to pick up my order. The next one should be in end of this week or early next. I can always swing by Davis on a day that works for you if I have time that day. But, I sure don't have the fancy variety that Deb does!

But what do I use as bedding inside the nest box? What do you guys prefer?

Mine kick the shavings out of the box, so I use a mix of shavings/ straw/hay.

Yes, the low heat could have slowed them down. I'd leave them to day 25-26 as long as you don't smell a bad egg in there.

Never help too soon, if the chick isn't ready to hatch you seriously risk killing them by helping even a few hours too soon. It's usually safer to leave them alone.

i've definitely gotten that message from reading the various hatching guides here on BYC -- and since the pip got a bit larger during the time that i was getting ready for school, and i heard it peep several times, it seems to be doing okay in there so far. have class from 10-12 & hope to head back home soon after that, to see if it's gotten any further!

Lauda as long as I'm sure they are not going to smother I don't worry too much about them. I do make sure air can get in the egg however I had too many smothered turkeys

I use shavings, like you use in horse stalls. A big bag will last quite a while and they're nice and absorbent and clean

The pine shavings also leave a nice cution. I have one girl who lays an egg with a soft tip and if I don't have enough shavings it gets broken and they eat it!

Try winding the other direction. It pulls instead of pushing if it is wound the wrong way.

Speaking of incubators: which is your favorite? Had a hova bator I got 25 years ago (when I was 12 ) Its thrashed now. Looked at new hova bators and the Octogon 20. The one without the humidity pump is more of what I want to spend. But is it imperative to have that?Any input?

Hi all Happy Monday,
I haven't been on here for awhile and still need to catch up with what has been going on. But, I have a few questions if anyone can help me with I would be very grateful.
1st) I have another sick chicken. She is having trouble walking and cannot stand up. She hangs her wings down. I have started Corid in her water, but I am not sure she is even drinking it. Can someone tell me again about the necropsy from UCD. Where do I go to get this done. If she dies I would like to know how to protect my flock.
2nd) my silkie has gone broody and has been sitting on eggs. I dated some of them and it has been 30 days. Does it take that long for some eggs to hatch?
3rd) I did get one baby hatched from this clutch. Below are some pics
