California - Northern

one isbar (splash), one Daisy Jr. -- although another Daisy Jr hatched about 3 (or 4? i've lost track) weeks earlier, via one of the broodies -- this was its last portrait (i need to update!): it's either blue or a darkish splash at this point, definitely not black like its mom (she was a black australorp, dad is an SFH) here's the new chicks yesterday evening, mostly fluffed out -- one trouble with using the EcoGlow to keep them warm, it's harder to get photos, since they're always underneath it! i had to lift it out of the brooder-box to take this: both appallingly cute. and the remaining eggs still showed zero pips late today, and none looked promising when candled -- so the incubator is now off, and i'm delighted with the two chicks. will look forward to trying another batch of eggs (should be receiving some more birchen and/or duckwing marans from Texas sometime this fall), but am certainly... aware of how shaken-up shipped eggs can get! maybe i can do another road trip to the sierra foothills one of these days for some more isbar eggs from Dab or Mary/The Sheriff... in the meantime, crossing fingers that this chick is a girl (since i've already got a blue isbar cockerel, who's about 22 weeks old now). May your Daisy jr.'s be girls! They are adorable.

My cousin found some in Pennsylvania and is shipping them to me from there. I have a feeling she's getting them from greenfire and not telling me.
you have a very generous cousin

Happy for you and I hope it all works out.

It's redicules. She's very well off and knows I would never let her do that. She's playing me. Lol. Anyhow we grew up together like sisters. She a chicken nut too! Haha.

Thank you! I'm so excited :)

Re the road trip....We may want to partner up if you will have me. Or maybe we can pick up for one another. I have a laundry list of birds I want from Deb...in small increments... and I would love to get some Icelandics with White, Silver Grey, Blue or Black in them from Mary.

Your older chick is beautiful Hope its a girl and I hope these two new ones are both girls too...though if one of the Daisys is a boy you would be able to spread her DNA across generations so I guess it could be a win/win.

CHICKENS! Layers of many eggs! from the bottom of our omelets we thank you! May bugs rain on you from above and all the grass be succulent!

HaHaHa I think that should go on a coop plaque!

You can't really tell exactly what the eggs are going to be like that a pullet will be laying for a couple of weeks. Then they change again after the first molt. I have a hatchery Barred Plymouth Rock that layed nice large eggs and then after the molt she started laying huge torpedo eggs. They do not fit in the egg cartons! She is almost three years old now and I got an egg from her today.

Those first little pullet eggs are the best for baking!
I love the pullet eggs gonna have 2 for breakfast tomorrow

It's pretty standard for most birds to start out smaller and get larger as they mature. Some breeds seem to get larger faster than others and of course things vary from individual bird to bird. Mine lay a very standard shape and white to very pale tint.
I found an Icelandic feather in the fresh shavings so I am going to go ahead and call it an Icelandic egg

I also have an obsession with accuracy which I am letting go of right now...see it there it goes......whew feel better already. All I know is that of the 11 pullets I added to my flock this year at least 5 are laying. I expect nothing from my sussex or my by mix for at least a month but the other 4..an Iclandic, 2 EEs and and OE all look like it will be days to a week or two. I can't wait to see the eggs my EEs produce and to take a pic of my colorful basket when I get one.

That is really nice. It is also good of you to give her the pleasure of doing something nice for you. We women are often not really great at accepting generosity and I am sure your cousin is thrilled to be doing something to make you happy.

sounds like a deal to me, re: eggs -- and the first/older Daisy Jr is looking girlish so far, compared to the others from the same hatch, but it's early days yet!

and just noticed (no idea why) you have 999 posts on BYC -- one more to crack 1000!

I'm sure she is too. And you're right. I was just telling my daughter the other day to take compliments for Peetes sake! She's 7 and compliments embarrass her haha. And when I ask if she needs help she doesn't want it lol. Not sure if its her age or that she's a girl/woman. Haha
