Yesterday was a sucky day up here.
I found the baby pigeon dead in the morning, looked like they just squished it. Cupcake died late last night, she went to sleep in my lap and then she was gone. The skunk was outside the dog run last night and sprayed the garden cart when the dogs charged towards it when I let them out. The stink just kept invading the house all night.

Sorry you lost Cupcake and the baby. Hope you loose the skunk!

Up in Florence, OR, someone recently lost her entire flock to MG. All her SQ/BQ dark bra mas had to be destroyed, she even lost chicks that she had set from their eggs, they came out positive after hatch. That said, I would test to find out what it is before exposing to the rest of your birds.

Mg can be dire bad or indifferent. I know someone who had a bird tested and has a closed flock. She has never had symptoms in her flock and no one has been sick. Then of course there is the other extream where everyone is sick and dies. Its good to find out what is up. Does uc davis test? I don't know.

I'm so sorry for your loss! That is heartbreaking. Did your dog get skunked too or just your pens?.

This is officially the worst hatch I have ever had. I checked a few eggs that did not pass the float test and many died second week. I checked the temp records and no spikes . i have no idea what happened. Both my eggs and the shipped eggs did not do well. Not looking forward to writing this email....

Contact CAHFS and see what they say. The Cheapest option would be to take the sick chicken and one other to Their lab for euthanization and Necropsy. Sadly, figuring out what they have is worth culling a couple now.

some of the respiratory illnesses are 40 or so % fatal so you may want to know sooner rather than later. Of course all chickens that die should be sent in just to see what is going on with your flock. Commercial operations send in a sampling of their flock each year and pay the fee per chicken. They find the service to be well worth the cost. We have an advantage since the service if free for us.

Hopefully they will come out and test yours for free.

Ditto! I am sorry about cupcake.

I really do not like skunk smell. I smelled it in the wind a couple of weeks ago. Luckily they have never made it into town.

I am sorry about the poor hatch. It may be time to turn everything off and sterilize--let it all air out for at least a couple of weeks. I know that is hard with all of the orders you must have to fill....

Ok I may do this. Wonder how much it is?

The UCD Necropsy is free for flock owners of less than 1000. You can take in three per day for testing. Deceased birds can be mailed to them. Live ones are dropped off.

Best!

I am going to candle Beakface's eggs in the next few days. Today is day 7...dang that week flew by! When I did it last time I just grabbed them all took them inside to the bathroom where I candled eggs before and did it. I didn't know if it was better to do it like that or to do it in the coop after dark. The coop she is in would require me to go back to the egg door and sort of work in an awkward position so I would rather take them into the house. Plus my mom is supposed to come by today so it would be nice for her to share this with me. Do you think it is OK to do it like I did last time and bring them into the house?

Eggs can stay out for a couple of hours and be ok.

Have fun candling!
