and by the way, the new coop addition was finished yesterday!!

it has two 4'x8' side-by-side pens, each with its own 4'x30" henhouse & nesting boxes -- to be used as breeding pens, or to isolate a broody with her chicks, or to grow out little chicks, or whatever! built onto the end of the two 8'x8' pens, so the whole "unit" is 8'x24', and standing next to my original 8'x12' coop. lots of flexibility with space -- i'm so pleased!!

i may try popping Harold the CL in with a few of the older hens -- he's just started mating & is a bit over-eager, shall we say -- i thought the older girls might teach him a lesson? although they chase him when they're out free ranging -- could they possibly hurt him, being penned together in a smaller space?

That is a very nice setup! The chickens are very lucky.

They may go after Harold. He will have plenty of space to get away from them though.

Keep an eye on them. I am watching today-it is time to move the Pita Pinta Pullets out of the hutch with the boys. So far they are all right.

I would think they'll just teach him some manners!

Does anyone have really good cuckoo Marans? Someone on A Marans board I am on full of new new New ( and slightly uneducated) Marans people is looking for cuckoos, and Id love to put them in touch with someone with reasonable eggs and form.

That is really nice, and it went up fast!

I have two of Ozzie and Harriet's eggs under Beakface right now. If they hatch and are girls can I keep one and breed her back to Ozzie or would it be better to get an unrelated pullet ?

Congrats on the new coop Laura!

thanks, that's exactly what i'm hoping for! plus to give the girls in Harold's current pen a break, several of them don't even have red combs yet but he keeps pestering them... (now i just have to catch him!)

Beautiful, functional, comfortable looking coop - Very Nice!

Sure, put him in with the big girls and they will teach him manners. He has plenty of room to fly up on a perch to get away from them if they go after him for being a pest - and it will teach him not to pester the girls.

You can breed his daughters back to him - its very acceptable in chicken breeding and is not inbreeding. Its called Line Breeding if you continue with his grand-daughters, etc.. Just select the best ones and move the others to the eating egg pens. Breeding brother to sister is less acceptable because it will double up on any flaws as well as good traits - and it will eventually weaken the health.
