Thank you for the recommendation, the Foy's and Ador1 did not come up when I searched on the the computer it was only because you and gryeyes mentioned them that I found them. I will need a couple more and will try the Foy's also. I do like they have different size doors and all the positve feedback on them. I have a rooster that likes to lay in the doorway after everyone has gone in, that is why I was looking for one that would go back up upon making contact.
I am currently reading a thread about the Ador1. It is 50 pages long and the creater/seller of the door has posted info and answers to questions. I'm leaning towards buying at least 1 of them. I like that it runs on one 6 volt battery instead of AAs.

Your Welcome!

Bob Blosl passed away last Friday Afternoon. He was a great mentor and source of information. The Heritage RIR site has a lot of information and is a great resource for explaining why the Standard Bred or Heritage RIRs are nothing like Hatchery or Production Reds.
I saw that on some of the other threads. Very sad news. I have just started reading the heritage RIR thread and I appreciate how knowledgeable and helpful he was.

He was active on the Java thread too. Very sad.

Ron what is a "Fogel" RIR? I may be spelling that incorrectly. Is it the line? I I thought your birds were from Dick Horstman (also probably spelled incorrectly) so I was confused.

How do you guys check for activity in hatching eggs on Day 21? It feels wrong to look under her...like opening the bator. But I want to know!!!!

Ron Fogel took Ricky Bates' flock after he died in a car crash. Ricky got his from the St.Romain's and they are from Louisana. The St.Romains got their RIRs from the Mohawk V line. They have been show winners for all of the different breeders that have had them.

I have one line of those and two pullets from Dick Hostman which came from Kettle. I have two lines of RIRs, both heritage or Standard Bred.

I would suggest you look for shells outside her or listen for peeps. Picking her up is like opening an incubator - and if she is the kind that gets upset when you mess with her, her moving around because she is agitated can mess up the eggs or crush them. They call the hen's lockdown "pancake" for a reason - flat down and don't move. She will share when they are hatched.. patience!

Holy Crocus! That made my head spin...thanks for explaining. Your RIRs are lovely! Are you planning to start showing?

Also thinks for the insight re the Octagon 20...for not much more money I will have something that can rescue everyone if a broody bails.

I almost did last year at the Red Bluff Show. I am considering it for the next show. Red Bluff appeals to me since it is a one day show.

You will really like the Octagon.

Thanks!!! last time I was so excited I grabbed chick 1 and brought him inside to show my DH. Then I sat in the coop and watched the rest hatch which was not easy since it was HOT. I have since found out that that was the WRONG thing to do but she didn't seem to mind at the time

Yeah wow! That was painful. It's like a chicken family tree. My own family tree makes my head hurt.

Go big or go home..... right? Anyway, bigger is better so they say. Wow! lots of cliche phrases associated with big. Anyway I ramble.

It seems with this silly hobby, big is never big enough. Either coops are too small, runs are too small, incubators are too small......Chicken math is the Debil Bobby! (sorry, movie reference.... not everyone will understand that and just think I am weird)

I am glad you are the one that is supposed to have patience today and not me. I lack the patience gene.

It is easier to just say the came from Ron Fogel. They are great birds regardless of their history.

Which movie?
