California - Northern

I have some partridge silkie/CL hens . They look like smooth silkies but they are a little thinner and had light skin and legs. Silkie like personalities, but they can see. Should lay blue eggs.

I saw that on FB! that sucks! but great they figured it out! I hope you can figure out ways to be outside and not be hurt.

HUZZAH!

You have to be careful with graywater for salts especially. We use our cloths washing water on the lawn, and I only found 1 soap I can use. NO borax or oxy or anything, and most green soaps use borax so cant use those. It was tricky figuring it out. We looked into using some other water, but I was worried about trying to get all cleaning fluids safe, and not being able to sue bleach, so I did not into it more.

try putting a thermometer/hydro on the inside of the door, that way you can see what you need to add.

I got the second cocci medicine fro jeffers today. Im going to try the whole program on all my chicks now in an effort to get chicks who have strong immunities in later life, since it is so bad in this area.
Since you will not know if it has a silkie gene ( if its sizzle it is only 50% likely to carry one) you are unlikely to find someone who is looking for it as a project. Id vote table bird.

Welcome all new people, welcome back all people on vacations, and huzzah for all new eggs, coops, land...... etc... Awesome pictures...
I was wondering where you were? I was stalking your profile to see if you left BYC, or just us here in NO CA?! lol Glad you came back cause there is something missing without you.

Whatever it is came back. It got Betty (I literally keep crying my eyes out) and one of my Buff Orps. I'm so angry and so tired and so sad right now.
I am so sorry. Did you find anything to put out and see if you can find out what it is? Do you think it is too big for a trap?

I'm so sorry Amy. I know how special Betty was to you. It seems a lot of us have lost special birds lately.
She was. We have livestock and we have a couple that are pets. This horrid creature is literally eating all the pets. ALL the birds it's killed - 5 so far- have all been pets. Betty was a sass pot. I have no doubt that it got Rosie the Buff Orp and Betty got ticked off and defended her. That's just how Betty was. She once attacked me for moving Mabel and her babies to the new coop. (Mabel is also now dead thanks to whatever it is) It's hard losing livestock but this is the first pet one that I felt deeply for - that I've lost. I had her 2 years. I feel bad for all of us losing our birds right now. UGH

I had a soft shelled EE egg on the poop board last night too

gonna cook it up and feed it to the girls tonight,

Sent DH a text asking him to check on my girl for shells, cheeps and pancakes. I am going home at lunch to have a look-see myself.

for at least 1 SPW girl for each of us.
Did you go home at lunch?

I am going to cook all of them up and give them back to the birds. Corid isn't that bad but I already have a B Vitamin deficiency so I don't want to take any chances. So sad I don't get to eat the first egg! Oh well. There will be more.

It was a bad week in N CA chickenland.

We lost our biggest and best Langshan roo Gandalf this past week. He didn't go into the trailer coop at the farm one evening. My friend's kids didn't notice that he wasn't in there (it's a huge trailer) and they found him dead outside the coop in the morning. He didn't have any marks on him so they aren't sure how he died. He was the only white roo we had. I originally didn't plan on breeding whites but he was such a lovely hunk of a bird that I changed my plans. Now we are back to BBS only.

I am sorry for both of you! It is sad when they die like that.

It is a scary time of year with low food levels for the predators and the sun going down too early for us to get the chickens to be for the night.

Be safe out there!

I remember you talking about Betty. Wasn't she a BA? She was the hen you gave Ron's Wisher chicks to right? I am so sorry that you lost her and yes...we were talking not long ago about how they somehow single out the favorites.

I did...couldn't hear anything...I have to shove my whole upper body into the coop through the back egg door to get a thorough look and listen. Fortunately I am not very tall.

I know how you feel about wanting to eat the first egg...I have a compulsion to be the only one who gets to eat a first egg. So far out of 13 new pullets...8 are laying maybe that one on the poo tray was from girl #9 that means there are still 4 or 5 more first eggs for me to discover and eat.

So sorry about your loss too. I don't know if it is easier or harder when they go for unexplained reasons. Just know it is hard.
